ATI vs. NVIDIA

PCGamer reviewed the latest 3D video cards in their July 2004 issue.
I am only summarizing the two high-end video cards by ATI and NVIDIA.

GeForce 6800 Ultra
NVIDIA's latest 3D card is a stunning technological achievement

HIGHS: Outrageously fast; has support for DirectX 9.0c.
LOWS: Requires two 12-volt leads from a 480-watt power supply; dual-slot.

BOTTOM LINE: From a technology standpoint, you can't ask for more than what the GeForce 6800 Ultra delivers

RADEON X800 XT P.E. (Platinum Edition)
Not to be outdone, ATI's latest is also a stunning technological achievement

HIGHS: Super-fast; single-slot; hardly drops a frame with AA/AF enabled.
LOWS: Limited support for DX9.0c; slower than 6800 Ultra in synthetics.

BOTTOM LINE: ATI wins this race by a 12-volt lead, but it was close. It's possible the GF 6800 Ultra could take the lead once 9.0c content arrives.

If you have any questions regarding information on these video cards or the RADEON X800 PRO, please PM me...or just pick up the latest PCGamer issue.

BTW: They also included Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising on their monthly game disc, which is a surprisingly great game.

Can't argue with what they say, just ordered myself a X800 XT Platinum :)

Anyone know when DirectX 10 comes out?

Im getting a 650 Watt max power supply with my next rig anyway so its the 6800U for me :P

No idea about Dx 10 soz

I heard DX10 was coming out about the time Longhorn is released

Cool, hope so... wouldnt want my X800 XT to be outdated before its even delivered here :)

Are you kidding....?

most games dont take advantage of technology that is already a few years old.

It'll be a long while after DX10 is released, that we actually see games using DX10 technology.

do you think it will be possible to play hl2 w/ 6800u at 1600x1200 w/ at least 40fps?

Of course.. you can do that with the 9800XT.

and about 50-60FPS at 1280x1024

It obviously depends on the scene though.

Yeah 9800XT is still $500, and the X800 Pro owns it, and is $400. You do the figures

i see 9800xts for $370 on pricewatch and x800 pros for $425

Meh, go to regular stores, they are still $500. X800 Pro for $425? shit I must've gotten a deal on mine, got everything for $430+ with shipping and tax too. :)

X800 XT Platinum for £180 - and im in the UK!! (thats about $326 USD btw)

that can't be right, but if it is , you could buy those up and make a nice profit on ebay

It's definately right, but I can just get the one - for me :D

:hmph: How come online I see store prices for $399; CompUSA, BestBuy. I hear people that x800 Pro prices are like $450, which one is true or both?

What is this I see on places like ebay and newegg(!) x800 pro goes for like 450-475$ and at best buy here its only 399$?

yea newegg is making as much as profit as possible since the demand is pretty high for the Pro's, Bestbuy is selling the Pro's for $399 as previously stated, and the Platinum for $499.... not bad, seeing that there floppy drives are $35!

The suggested retail price for the X800Pro is 399$.
That is why it is priced at 399$ at those stores.

The X800pro is the fastest card currently available in the USA so online stores know the 9800XT is priced at over 400$ so they price the X800Pro at a price that reflects it's performance in comparison.

Until the 6800 Ultra/GT and X800 XT/Pro are available expect to see different prices.

about the 6800ultra power issues people complain about

nvidia recently stated that the boards given out where revision boards with beta drivers. they say that the currect psu requirement is a 350W psu and a 480W psu if you are overclocking.

ati and nvidia both state there will be a performance jump within the next months with updated drivers.

the reason why they are priced so high right now because nobody has them in stock. soon as they start shipping thousands in the first week or so of june the prices should go to MSRP or lower.
