Awarded Episode 1 '87%'. Most of the score was knocked down due to the Episodic nature of it, not the quality of the content. Screens are pretty awesome.

It shows:

Zombines
Alyx using the sniper rifle and shooting away a metal panel to reveal a Combine soldier
The gunship/warehouse battle.
This section: http://www.halflife2.net/screenshots/displayimage.php?album=7&pos=2. It has been ravamped and looks mighty awesome.
Citadel core
A very worn looking Barney handing over the Crowbar
Combine soldier battles
More Zombines
Alyx and Gordon in a car park
Gordon covering antlion holes with cars
A stalker screaming in Alyx's face
Zombines.

Seems like Episode One delivered, despite complain about Valve going "OMG, Episodic = Instant suckage!". Not surprised though. ;)

Can't wait!

Hmm I wonder if that will be a staple for future Eps. That is Barney handing Gordon the crowbar. It happened in HL2, and will happen in AM. Just wondering. btw, awesome news in EP1. This looks like a worthy successor to HL2.

Possible, but doubtful. It's been said Barney supplies a great deal of humour to Episode 1, and the crowbar scene is one that I shall certainly look forward to ;).
Valve have done some work to his model though - he's pretty battle weary, and definately needs a shave.

Also, there's alot of Stalkers trying to fix the Citadels de-stabilizing core.

I just remembered, I won't be able to play this until the sixth. Going on vacation. Argghh!. I'll be seeing Lambda symbols everywhere :p

That is interesting that they revamped Barney's model, though. It certainly speaks of the quality that went into this episode. I seriously can't wait for this.

Well, yeah, if this is where you're doing on vacation.

God the stalkers are cool. Can't wait to see them in Episode 1.

Speaking of that, do we actually get to fight them face-to-face, or do we just get to see them from areas we can't access(like through the glass in the gameplay video)

From what I understand, you do get the chance to fight the stalkers.

87% eh, I'm guessing players/editors alike aren't quite used to the episodic nature yet eh Samon? All in all it's still a neat score...I wonder what the players reaction will be once it's played.

Yep, you fight Stalkers.
Neato, I just hope they're not extremely easy considering they really are just skin and bones on stilts.

Your always going to have to cut down the score when something is short.

It was mentioned that the Stalkers are annoyance and not challenging enemies.

Oh well :/

Are any of these screens online yet? I'd like to see them.

They're practically skeletons, it's surprising that they still live in that condition. They will probably have a different feel than fighting the combine soldiers though.

90+ scores are reserved by many magazines for stuff that goes that extra mile and truely pushes the boundaries. Though the Episodes may be dripping with highly concentrated quality, they aren't too hot on them because small = insubstantial in their eyes. What steps Ep1 makes forward are compromised for them by the fact that they're not given enough time to experience those steps before it's all over.

Still, the scores could be larger if they stepped back from the product and realised that people aren't going to be paying a third of what they pay for their 3x longer games.

It should be noted that 87% is that magazine's highest score to date along with another game who got the same score.

But Zombines and the new Synths are challenging. Stalkers are supposed to be freaky because a part of them is still human.

The zombines look awesome. It seems that they charge you and try to blow themselves up with a grenade when they're right next to you.

Episode 1 is a must get therefor!

87%?! What an overstated score! The game looks like a 77% at the most!

Nah I'm joshing ya. Good stuff though, she be a worthy buy.

These reviews are pissing me off!

If thats the case then i take it back.

I really don't like it when reviewers give a score of 90+ for more than one game a year. Makes the review seem cheap.

I'd forgotten about that - at one point I felt the game should have been called 'Episode One: The Search for the Crowbar'... ;-)

Yeah, I heard you get it quite late.

So what's the melee weapon till then? :O

PS: I just finished Doom for the nth time. Still rox!

I'd assume there isn't one, which explains why the gameplay vids show the player using pistol and shotgun to kills vanilla zombies and headcrabs. I think it's a good play mechanic actually, not having that melee weapon to fall back on. Forces people to use the other guns for the small stuff.

It's going to be a pain killing the small headcrabs in the dark with no crowbar.. urgh :p But then again you have alyx with you :D

Wow i was just watching one of the videos and the zombine's headcrab came off. Then when i paused, i saw no head on the zombine. COOL!! just like the beta zombie.

I never used the Crowbar on enemies. Well, except from the start, where you have to beat those two CP's with the Crowbar. Brutal.

the gameinformer article stated that you start with the most powerful weapons (Super Grav Gun), and work your way down to the lesser weapons ala the crowbar if I remember right. It definitely sounds like a unique approach to the typical FPS formula.

I've heard rumours over at the SA forums that apparently the Sniper Rifle and the Hopwire make appearances.

I did see a hopwire notepad in the GCF. And the sniper rifle is alyx's gun she uses in one of the levels in the game.
