Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

I have never met an anime fan who would even consider saying anything bad about Ghost In The Shell, it is one of the very best anime's ever to come out of Japan and often lawded as the best.
Well theres your answer; I wouldnt say I was an Anime fan really.
Anime as a genre is pretty awful, but it does throw up some exceptional works.

I think this is a common problem with people's perception of Anime... It isn't a genre, but it gets treated like one. Taking anime as a genre is exactly the same as taking All Live-Action films as a genre, which is clearly something that people would never normally do. I think the reasoning goes back to the idea that Anime is all gory action movies or something, where it is understandable that "anime" is often of poor worth, because very few "gory action movies" are of. I think the next progression of this is probably something like "Anime = Hentai + Gory Action Movies + Ghibli Movies". Even with Ghibli's ever-more popular stuff (Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies, My Neighbour Totoro and Princess Mononoke particularly), that's still a recipe for "pretty awful with some exceptional works".

I guess what i'm trying to say is that if you take anime, as a whole, you're only going to get as much good stuff, mid stuff and arse-wiping stuff as you would with live action.

ie 80% of it is rubbish.

I think there is a case to be made against the prevailance of certain archetypes within anime - giant robots, ninjas, magical girls and simple characters-in-a-boarding-house-or-something - but only as much as there's one to be made against archetypes in western media (reality TV, rom-coms, sitcoms, slasher horror).

I agree with both of you, I thought I would get flamed for commiting "fan-boy heresy", but Im glad to be wrong.
One of the things I disliked about GITS was, the major`s visual style. All the other characters have life-like faces and the malor has the traditional "no-detail and saucer sized eyeballs" anime girl look. She also wanders around in revealing lingerie- whilst not a problem itself- it does contrast with the males in the story, who are given status by their traditonal garb.
Its only a problem for me because GITS does ask you to take it seriously in a lot of the details, and having the main character look like a bimbo "anime" bunny-girl doesnt exactly help in that respect.
If they had put the sexuality into some kind of context then it wouldnt matter, but they saw fit to not include some of the more suggestive scenes from the majors private life -from the graphic novel, I might add- maybe to keep the major as a less sapphic figure.

Its not a huge issue , but when I think "anime" and GITS, the major's face and costume are the only things that fit with both.

Man after my own heart ^^. I knew that i'd have difficulty loving the film the minute the main character took all her clothes off and jumped from the top of a building. It has some excellent action sequences, but I just find films with that kind of female representation hard to believe or enjoy. I hear the TV series is better in that respect. But it's also £30, so I think I can forgive it. (/me initiates poor student mode).

That is one annoying thing about the TV series - the ridiculous-looking costume Kusanagi wears when not on missions (the combat garb looks incredibly cool by contrast). Okay, so perhaps in the future clothes will get even more revealing, but that just looks stupid. Whereas in the film, I didn't feel the way it was done with sexuality in mind - it kind of more seemed the opposite...as in most people would feel embarassed and she's just absolutely stone-cold. Anyway, towards the end of the TV series she starts wearing trousers. I cheered.

Is that from 2nd gig?

1st gig (about 30% of the time anyway):

Yeah, it's the episode menu music for "YES" and "Ag2O" (which is the episode menu I streamed from and uploaded) It's on a number of episode menus, off the top of my head I know it's on Vol 1 Ep. 3 + 4 menus as well. I just can't find it in any of the OSTs - Be Human, SAC OST 1 and 2 etc. It's annoying me, because I think it's a reallly awesome song.

I'm pretty sure HMV has it. But, I'm not sure if there are any HMV stores in the United States. Do you mean order it online? I'd try Amazon.

Many people think the Major dresses like that in the first season is to get in touch with her femininity. She has no real way to define her gender so she wears these clothes. Others think that it's fanservice.

I looked on Amazon they only 2nd gig.... whatever that mean :S Im not sure

Play sell it, but it's Region 2.

They're selling Season 1 and 2 at my Best Buy. I would've bought them...but I decided not to. Gotta save my monies.

I saw both the second and first movies a couple hours ago, so I'm writing this fresh from the excitement, but: I was blown away. I love it. Unfortunantly I got a copy of Innocence from... a miscellaneous island in the Pacific Ocean... so... uh... it was all in Japanese, and the subtitles were along the lines of 'Holy ambigeous visage he saw'.

I'm trying to refigure out Innocence. I loved GintS, though.

/EDIT Hmm. I see that the movies had to omit several subplots and related materials because they had to cram it into 83 minutes. I think I'll go pick up the manga/anime later.

I have to say that while I enjoyed GitS very much so, I liked Innocence even more. Probably because Batou is the most awesome, badass character ever. And yeah Jintor, there's about a million seperate philosophies and plots under the main one. Basically you can choose how deep you want the films to be.

Ghost In The Shell is an absolute masterpiece and work of art.

I got it, watching episode 14 right now... it's pretty weird so far... I had to skip episode 12, though, it was corrupted for some reason. And by weird, I mean good. That cyber chat-room one was fun.

I can't seem to find the DVDs for it anywhere >.< Nearly all anime comes on VCDs here, which really sucks.

That the tin boxset? If not, you got a little ripped, as it's about $55 for the regular version on Play.

Finished watching 2nd GIG months ago and already received 3rd OST.

There is a rumor that 3rd GIG is in production already. But again, it's just a rumor.
