Ghost Town

I've had so many people tell me about this it's unreal. I saw it first however as a post on http://www.duckandcover.net although I'm sure that wasn't the first place. But this things been getting around through the online communities much like the Star Wars kid or FAKE Mavav.org website did. Nice read though, even if that nice lady did end up gettin a little to close to the radiated buildings.

Some of the pictures in there can also be seen in Stalker screenshots.

Like the Basketball court and the ferris wheel (duh)

Really cool site. I would LOVE to go there and do some photography stuff. Real ghost towns are really cool. I've been to some and they are really eerie. I think chernobl is pretty unique though cause most of those people had to just up and leave. The whole emotional commentary got old after the like 5th page. make up your own! here's mine: "This phone rings... but no one is here to hear it" :'( phaha.

maybe what it would be like if a town was hit with a nuetron bomb

Stalker is based on this too... I love that game :D
wow that's reallly wierd cause while i was looking through the photo's I thought to my self "that looks like that game stalker" and I dont know anything about stalker or follow it.

i'm not gonna lie.. i just skipped through the pages to see if there was a good pic of the woman. i was losing hope, but there towards the end was a good pic of her. i'd hit that.

If Stalker is able to capture the atmosphere of those pictures, Half-life 2 may have some competition.

cool site, chernobyl is one of the most interesting of the past 100 years
cant wait for stalker

It's strange... how fairly obscure that event is, like it was swept under the carpet or something. I would've thought Chernobyl would be a lot more well known, I don't know, maybe it's just where I live, but people seem fairly oblivious. I can't see why, though, it's so unique. Like a place that time forgot. But I'd never go there, looks like the most depressing place on earth.

It already does. I like STALKER more than HL2 at the moment. Partly because the devs actually release thing and talk more about their game. I believe they release weekly screenshots, but don't quote me on that. :)

Extremely interesting. And at the same time frightening and gripping.

Agree'd. I'm a bit annoyed though, I stayed in Kiev a few years back (girlfriend) but never had the inclination to go to this ghost town thing, wasn't something I even thought about. Looking at these pics I really regret that now. :( Probably never get another chance

Damn you for not showing this site to me years ago! *banned* ;) j/k

I knew about Chernobyl before. I bet the mass public doesn't know but I think people that stay on top of current events and are some what educated know about it.

It looked like from that page that you had to have papers and clearance to get where she went.

heh yeah, not exactly the easiest thing to get over there are they :)

The Chernobal incident is pretty well know in Ireland.Many people try to foster orphans of the disaster and on Easter Sunday a large convoy of various supplies went off to Belarus.

Its not just the ghost town its the people who had to evacuate their homes.
And the children of the people who are still suffering.

Stalker has a cool atmosphere but it cannot even compare to those pictures of the real chernoybl. What makes the ghost town pictures so amazing is that it has such a surreal feel to it.

Stalker looses alot of its atmosphere from its monsters. In my opinion, they pull you out of this intense atmosphere. Those monsters make it feel more like doom than in the middle of a desolate town. I think stalker needs to abandon all of the old monster they have and get some new ones. I want monsters that will make the environment seem even more surreal, I don't want any of this zombie junk - I will save that for Doom3 and Half-life 2.

~~~
I think there are two reasons why people aren't that informed about chernoybl. 1) It has largely been kept secret by the Soviet Union/USSR. 2) People cannot seperate the facts from the myths regarding nuclear radiation.
the pictures shown on that sight are really fascinating.. cant imagine my hometown being a ghosttown. and yeah, it must be the most depressing place on earth then..
They had to evacuate that in a rush.
Chernobyl was a catastrophe of Apocalyptical proportions. What did you expect?
"...humans may begin repopulating the area in about 600 years - give or take three centuries"
Rrriiiiight... That's quite a margin of error you got there
If you know anything about radiocative half-life's, half-life is only a statistical probability and nothing more. Basically in 600 years, the majority of the area maybe habitable, but some pockets of radiocative will decay faster or slower. Half-life is only an average, not a rule.
