Giant Spinning Fans

Apart from slicing zombies and possibly combine, anyone know what use the giant spinning fans in Ravenholm have?

Are they there just to serve as enjoyment, or is there a reason? i.e ventilation (doubtful).

just seemed a little odd, thats all.

In the clip, you just have to admire Valve's clever placing of zombies just before you reach the fan, so you just sit back and watch each one get cut in half!!
