(sorry if anyone has already said this)

So i just finished re-playing portal, and a couple seconds after i put the final sphere that drops from GLaDOS into the incinerator, GLaDOS said "I'm the only thing standing between us and them." So i guess that GLaDOS was somehow keeping the combine or the aliens (or both or maybe race x) from teleporting to earth. But when Chell (the player) kills GLaDOS, she can no longer keep them from coming.

This idea fits in perfectly with the speculation that portal is a prelude to what happened in black mesa.

Ideas anyone?

There is no evidence that GLaDOS had anything to do with the BMI, and anyways, the xenians came to earth by portals both occuring randomly due to the BMI and by Nahiliths "powers".

Theres no evidence that that GLaDOS didn't have anything to do with it either.

What I'm saying is that GLaDOS somehow repressed those portals. The portals after the BMI were random but who's to say that the BMI itself was random? Maybe the G-Man or Breen or whoever caused it waited for the right moment.

And if the meaning of the quote is something else besides what i think it is, whats the meaning then?

How would she "repress" the portals?

It is also pretty much an accepted fact that G-Man set the events of BM up.

For the meaning, I imagine that this is after the BMI, and thus if she is destroyed, the Xenians would be able to get into the facility (Apature Labs) by simple walking in the giant hole likely caused by the implosion or such.

Also, the "No evidence it didnt happen" isnt a very good argument.

1. She'd repress the portals the same way that the G-Man creates them (probably). In black mesa the G-Man could create portals whenever he felt like it. Maybe he used technology developed at aperture? Maybe GLaDOS used the same technology to repress the aliens and the combine?

2. There's strong evidence that the G-Man caused the BMI, what with him being the one who gave the crystal to Eli and his fellow scientists in black mesa, but its still not absolute evidence that he caused it.

3. There's a bunch of evidence that suggests that what happened in portal is before the BMI. First off, the combine are trying to get to the Borealis so they can use aperture science technology so that they can establish a connection to their world and send reinforcements to earth (or at least thats what most people think). Now if portal happened after the BMI, why would the combine go all the way to some remote boat in the middle of the arctic when they could, as you put it, just walk in through the big hole?

4. Explain to me how the no evidence against it argument isn't a very good argument.

GLaDOS said "I'm the only thing standing between us and them."

Perhaps its in reference to the competition between AS and BM, or could refer to a third unknown corporate party

I think it's in reference to you being sheltered from the outside world, nothing deeper than that.

The logical meaning of those words is that GLaDOS is the only thing standing between you and the horror which lies outside the Aperture Science complex. She's trying to put you off destroying her by saying that she's protecting you from something far worse.

I expect she may have been referring to the technology that she felt obligated to protect from the Combine. I mean, really, you don't want them getting their hands on some nifty personalised portal technolgoy, along with terrabytes of data on Aperture's experiments.

Actually, I assumed that it took place during the Half-Life 2 time period.

I'm pretty sure G-Man didn't have an Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device. If he can stop time and pluck you out of the universe, re-inserting you into it some 20 or so years later, I doubt he has much need for Aperture's technology. And I doubt Aperture's portal technology could repress any aliens - the ASHPD makes intra-dimensional portals. They can't tunnel through to another universe, and I doubt they can stop anyone else from doing so.

The burden of proof is on whoever makes the claim first, not whoever wants to refute it. If you make a claim with no supporting evidence then no-one needs to bother refuting it, as there's nothing to refute. You couldn't disprove the existence of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, but that doesn't mean you could assert that He exists.

There's no evidence that Gman actually created portals, rather than just disappearing into space, which is what he seems to do. Besides that, how could that same "technology" that creates a portal stop a giant portal, presumably no where near where GLaDOS, and aperture science are?

2. There's strong evidence that the G-Man caused the BMI, what with him being the one who gave the crystal to Eli and his fellow scientists in black mesa, but its still not absolute evidence that he caused it.

Freeman caused it, by pushing the crystal into the Anti-Mass spectrometer. Gman knew what it would do, and he warned breen against using it, but breen wouldn't listen. Black mesa got the crystal by teleporting to xen, not by the gman having it.

Possibly because the combine didn't come to Earth until a few years after the BMI. There's plenty of time for portal to take place in between both events, and maybe even while the combine ruled over Earth. The combine have been on earth for years, so what makes you think that they couldn't have figured out about the portal technology? Especially if Mossman knew about it, and she was working for them before the end of HL2.

4. Explain to me how the no evidence against it argument isn't a very good argument.

Because it just shows everybody you can't prove your point by evidence, so you use their "lack" of evidence to prove that you're somehow right.

In Episode Two (spoilers) it comes right out and says that G-Man was the one who supplied the crystal. Given that, I'm pretty certain he wanted the BMI to happen.

Ah evidence, one of life's little brilliant bits.

Also, I'm pretty sure the G-Man can stop time, at least from his subject's point of view. I think that's the main point. We only ever see it from Gordon's point of view.

Exactly.

They say imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, right, GordonFreeman502?
