Okay I have a crazy but what if GlaDos's warning about dangers outside of the enrichment center were just the things going on at the time(the time being that of HL1 which last I checked is supposed to happen during the early 21st century) these things being, global warming, assorted violence, the Bush administration.

These are just my thoughts seeing as that brief glimpse of the outside looks a lot like North America(In fact if there wasn't other evidence I'd say it was San Jose) but really the things mentioned are pretty darn bad

Now before I post this I do ask with the strong force possible that this doesn't turn into a political conversation, please.

If anything, she is talking about the Resonance Cascade, and the Combine.

I highly, highly, doubt Valve would have that be the reason. Can you imagine how dull that is?

That's like if you are watching Donnie Darko, and Frank the bunny is like "The world will end sooooon" and then you find out at the end he's just talking about the 9/11 terrorist attacks because the movie came out in 2001? Wtf? Where does that even come from, doesn't tie in at all? Lame.

No way, for starters Half-Life takes place in an alternate universe to ours. Also the writers are far more likly to reference events in the Half-Life universe than make obscured political comments.

However given the controlled and sterile nature of Enrichment Center I do think it is possible she was talking about the general dangers of everyday life rather than something like Portal Storms - I'll have to listen to the quote again.

he's trying to say that half-life is set in a fictional world, and referencing real-world events would be lame.

It does take place in an alternate universe. One where portal technology is much farther along.

The part where she says she's the only thing between you and "them" seems to indicate the Combine...

How do you know that it's not far along in this universe? :)
Half-Life 1 took place some time between 2000 and 2010. Portal specifies GLaDOS being turned on in the last years of the 20th century. HL2's architecture and remnant human technology - cars, computers, televisions - is contemporary.

HL takes place in 'a different universe' to the extent that all sci-fi does; Jurassic Park takes place in an alternate universe where it's actually possible to clone dinosars, and Independence Day in a cosmos containing beligerent planet-eating aliens.

Some people don't seem to know the difference between "fictional universe" and "alternative universe". Sure, they may seem similar, but they are actually not. You can have alternative or parallel universes in a fictional universe, but not other way around.
