Gold questions.........

I'm curious about "gold". Is there laws or anything that says a game has to go "gold" 2 weeks before it hits stores?. Can the game go "gold" a week before they announce that its gone gold?.

For example, Valve might announce on friday that hl2 is gold, but maybe it really went gold a week before, which could allow it to hit stores on the 30th?.
