Good bye HD-DVD and Blu-Ray

We know all about them.
The cost will be just to high though when they first come around. Thats for an average disk, thats not talking about the read\writer.

"However, the reader currently costs approximately US$15,000, and a single disc currently costs approximately US$120."

Thats a lot of 1's and 0's...
I don't see these becomming popular to be honest... But they may.

Exactly. "Up to" 3.9TB is insane and not needed at this time. Maybe in 7 years... o_O

these wont be the next generation, they will be the median AFTER HD-DVD and Blu Ray most likely. So id say give it another 8 years.

coming out 2006...this year. 200GB HVD disk. Read the whole article.

yea prototype, these wont be mainstream.

They will have to. But your right about them not coming out until after Blu-Ray, and who knows, Blu-ray could make something totally insane about 5 years after the release of the blu-ray disks.

Anyone remember the jump from 1.44MB floppes to 650MB CDs?
Yeeeah.

I doubt blu-ray or HDDVD will take off, I think it's more likely we will be stuck with regular DVD's for a few more years and then maybe these (or something similar) will start to get phased in.

Well these will be great for big companies who need several backups of tons of data.

Exactly... but there not much else you or I could do with them really. Sure you could store EVERYTHING onto one... but I just wouldnt recommend that.

Give it a few years and maybe they will become more mainstream, but i doubt it myself. They'll create some new type of storage, like someone has already said.
Discs have to spin... that makes them slow. Stationary storage is much faster and is the future.

Lets start a fund raisier and get a bunch of these, VDSL's and Oc43's and download the internet!
Whos with me!
Oc43 = 2gigabits/second

Are you kidding me? A little plastic circular object can hold approximately 3.9Terabytes? I'll get 7. Jk.

Porn Storage!
Yeah they use a crystal setup. It's how crystals react to light. They can record and read from it so fast because they can just shine a light through for writing and reading is just collecting the light and sending the data rather than having a CD spin and use a laser.

Hell, that could store the whole worlds supply of porn
I wonder how many terabytes of the Internet is porn. But I can guaran-friggin-tee you it's more than 4.

Wow, porn on the go perhaps? I'll need a 104x Speed reader to get all my pictures loaded really quick before I make a mess.

Yeah get a few of them then :).

Well if you look at the stuff the movie industry has planned, it becomes obvious the holo disks are a generation away, they should take off about 7-8 years after blue/HD.

Right now for a 1080i DVD disk you need more then 30GB of disk space, which is why there is no 1080i programming available.

Then if you look at what James Cameron is doing, he is now filming his next two blockbuster hollywood movies in 3d recordings. This is the step beyond simple HD.

With the 3d recordings, its such high quality, the images no longer look like their on a screen but you can see real depth. I've seen a shot of video done in 3d video and it really was like nothing I had ever seen.

It was the peice to the puzzle, it was that thing that seperated seeing something on TV and seeing it in reality. I mean, it really blew my mind.

Movie theatures are going to be equiping themselves with super high resolution 3d projectors in the next two years.

For this type of media, 100GB is needed minimum. But thats 4 years away, 2010 stuff.

So IMO, if you look at the way things are progressing, were going to need those holo disks in about 10 years, but until we need them, they will be pointless.

There could probably be some very useful things these disks can be used for, other than just games and movies.
