Good Singleplayer Games?

I work a job where I have LOTS of downtime (in fact I'm at it right now).

This downtime is extended even more when I work Fridays. I have like 3-4 hours straight where I don't need to do anything (along with a few hours scattered through the rest of my shift) and I usually borrow a buddy's laptop to watch movies and whatnot. This time I'm gonna bring my computer.

I'm just gonna bring in the tower, my headset and my mouse. I'll hijack the monitor of the computer that I'm on now and play away. The internet probably won't work because it has to be authenticated with some software...and even if I do get it working it'll be too slow for games so I'm asking this:

What are some good singleplayer games I could go pick up and play while getting paid :D

I'm hoping to find something newer. I just got this new computer working finally and I'd like to see some sweeeet graphics that I wouldn't have been able to see before. So new is good but not required.

I have:

HL2 (doesn't look any better than what I had before)
Doom 3 (boring, not gonna bother)
FEAR SP demo (I'll play it a few more times for sure)
BF2 (SP blows compared to MP :P)
Nothing else that I'm in the mood to play.

Any recommendations?

What kinda games are you looking for? Mainly FPS games?
Or just any good SP games?

Anything is cool with me. Those are all FPS games but I'm up for suggestion.

What kind of job do you have? Sounds sweet, I need to find me a do-nothing job too. :p

How about an rpg? Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape Torment & NWN should make the hours fly by.

Or better yet, get a DS :) (or PSP if you're a gfx whore ;))

I work for US Foodservice as an "Evening Computer Operator" .... I don't do much and I get paid $10/hr (which is sweet up in Grand Forks for a college student).

Farcry? No one lives forever 2?

I forgot Farcry. I'll probably pop that on the new computer. I've played and beaten NOLF2 I think. Is that the one where the end is when the lady is exploding or something? It's been a while.

Buy the Monkey Island series.

I've played the monkey island series actually. Fun games.

Beaten, beaten, beaten :P I do love a good RPG :D

San Andreas, just for the amount of things to do (and it's fun :p)
NOLF/NOLF 2 as previously mentioned
Max Payne 1/2
Age of Mythology (only one of the series I've played, bloody long and fun!)

Beaten San Andreas, NOLF/NOLF2 (I think), MP1 & 2 and Age of Mythology (solid RTS).

So would you say you have played most games that have been pretty big (sales/status wise)?

To misquote transformers, I must head deeper into the matrix.

But I need to go to bed, I hope you get some good games off other people!

What happened to Boiling Point? Is that game playable yet, did they release that humungo patch yet?

I played Red Faction one on PS2, and it's supposed to have a PC counterpart. That was a VERY good game. Dunno AI wise and stuff since it's been so long, but the geomod engine was awesome.

Oh and BTW, i'm speaking of RF1. RF2 was horrible compared to RF1. It was a good game but didn't live up to it's expectations. I love multiplayer though :D

I rented Red Faction 2 for PS2 back in the day when it came out. There was an mp level with two bases on opposite ends of a canyon and we kept trying to tunnel to each other. We never made it ;(

AHAHAHAAHA!!! That's hillarious!!!

What me and my friend would do, is we would make little caves, then we would run out of our caves for ammo, then run back and use the Railguns to kill each other.

But that's so ****ing funny, how far did you get and how long did it take?

*topic*
I know they're old but anything from the Trokia boys:
Arcanum - Old but good fun.
Fallout 1 and 2 - Still a laugh.

We made it like 3/4 of the way there but the engine stopped us before we could go any further :(

I talked to my buddy since the post and I guess it was RF1 that we rented :P I haven't played RF2.

I haven't played Arcanum (what's that like?) but I've played and beaten Fallout 1 & 2.

Operation Flashpoint: GOTY edition.
Get.
It.
Now.

Played the regular Operation Flashpoint and had fun but I don't think it was GOTY edition. I borrowed it from a buddy a long time ago.

Get Deus Ex. I just beat it the other day. The RPG elements make it much more interesting than a normal FPS. Plus you should be able to get it cheap. I got it for $10 CAD.

At risk of sounding like a broken record....

Beaten :P

Thief series? Btw, amazingly hard to get here. had to search over 10 different stores to find a copy.

I managed to make a tunnel with one of my friends on that Red Faction map. It went all the way through the cliff, from one base to the other.

Have you played Freespace 1&2? I think some people remade FS1 as a mod for FS2, so all you need is FS2. You can get it for free too, on the Underdogs or something, there was a thread here that tells where to get all the cutscenes and stuff.

Freelancer. Its a very well made mouse-based space flight sim. Even after you beat the game, there is still loads to do, areas to explore that you don't even get near in the story. You can ambush freighters, conduct trade runs, work for the police forces, or just be a freelancer, its really up to you. Granted the story is linear, but it progresses whenever you gain a certain amount of money. How you get the money is up to you.

Getting tired of quoting.

Beaten FS1&2 (loved them)

Beaten Masquerade, wasn't crazy about Bloodlines

Played all the Thief's as well.

Does the Deadly Shadows version need CDkeys? Mine somehow doesn't.

Take the level desgin and deep plot of the Fallout games.
Add fantasy with the hint of technology.
and you have archanum (sp?)
vist Trokia, just google it.

Get this game...it's pretty awesome, and it looks good even on my middle-of-the-line comp. Also, for handheld games, get Fire Emblem if you have a GBA/NDS (It's a GBA game). Awesome RPG, and Final Fantasy Tactics (also GBA) is too, though it has hundreds of weapons and skills...it's a long game.

Or find a version of Super Mario World and play it :D

System Shock 2 (whilst extremely ugly now-a-days) puts 99% of all games ever made, to absolute shame. I played when it first came out and didn't get past deck 3. Finished it back in 2003 whilst waiting for HL2 to come out and it is possibly the scariest game ever made. Bar none.

Its not that long a game though, only about 20 or so hours. But when those 20 hours are spent being terrified every waking second it seems like forever. And i'm not talking "Doom 3" terrified, i'm talking really ****ing I'm-a-mature-adult-and-i'm-scared-out-of-my-skull terrified. Its probably the scariest thing i've ever experienced. (considering i've never been in a bank robbery or school shooting or anything it might sound tame, but still, the game is ****ing terrifying).

I'd also suggest The Longest Journey if you haven't played that. Awesome adventure, fantastic storyline, some great humour in certain bits and pretty darn long too. Always keeps you interested somehow. Also, it dates back to 99 and it's kinda ugly, but not SS2 kinda ugly.

Freedom Fighters is another one thats just fantastic, simple fun. Plus the harder difficulties make it worth playing through again. And its just fun to play through again on any difficulty.

Rome: Total War is another great one, but i assume you've played it. If not, go buy it, you'll spend hours and hours slaving away trying to conquer the world.

Ooo, if you've got an Xbox, you have to get Fifa 2005. Its awesome to play with mates. Totally awesome. You'll find yourself actually like soccer hooligans. Its great.

System shcok 2
Riddick: Escape from butcher bay
Splinter cell Chaos theory

The KoToR games, and even though you did mention newer games by preference, you should give Dark Forces 2 and Mysteries of the Sith a go, they may be outdated, but they are both highly entertaining! :D

Or if all else fails, you could just work. :D

is that the one with a naked blue man at the start, or am i getting it mixed up with a different game?

Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines. Even though it runs like a dog, and is glitchy as hell, simple patching fixes most problems. And really, haven't you ever wanted to jump on random people and suck out their blood?

/EDIT damn, you've played that. Hmm... lemme think.

How'about ...Sims 2? (Probably got that). Hmm. Generals? No, too old. Uh... Jeez, i've no freaking clue. I can't be this ignorant of modern gaming. Curse it, curse it, curse it. Oh, do you have Sid Meiner's Pirates?
