Goodbye forever old friend

Please forgive me if this is old business or in the wrong place, I have to get it off my chest or I'm going to throw my machine through a window. I thought it might be nice to replay HL2 and episode 1 before getting the next installment. I had forgotten what an absolute pain in the butt Steam is. I remember jumping through hoops to satisfy their assumption that I'm nothing but a slime ball hell bent on pirating their precious software the first time I played these titles. (Nothing has changed I see.) My PC just crashed after a three hour installation/download of Episode 1. It has corrupted that great and holy, all seeing oracle of all that is righteous "Steam" and now it will not load. Of course none of the games will either. I poked around in the mini dump files Steam left scattered in it's directory and realized that after so many hours of being frustrated and pissed off, it just isn't worth it. I have removed Steam and all Valve associated applications from my computer and even manually cleaned out the Windows registry of anything Steam or Valve related. I swear as God is my witness that I will never purchase or download another piece of software that is offered by either of these two companies. It really does break my heart because I still feel that Half Life series is one of the greatest stories ever created in this genre. I lost myself for hours down the corridors of Black Mesa, the caves of Zen and even the ex Soviet era style streets of City 17. Still, thanks to Steam, it just ain't worth the frustration. Steam, I'm leaving you forever (not that you care). This has been a very abusive relationship. I give you money, sing the praises of your games and still you treat me like a thief. I know you won't wait up for me as I am just one stupid guy that had a few too many problems with the premise of your existence. No doubt I'll get flamed as a whiner who is blaming Steam for all of his problems. If this is the case, so be it. I understand O' Great God of Anti piracy and content delivery.

Eh. Fair enough.

I don't see the point of signing up and telling us about it, though. We don't know you.

Or if you want to, get HL on another console

I still concur with his point of Steam being over-enthusiastic on trying to get to grips with piracy, which leads to the good suffering from the bad. It's like Windows Genuine Advantage, doing more harm than the good it's designed for.

Still, as said before, there's no point telling us what you think. Tell Valve instead.

So you prefer anti piracy that explodes your PC if you have dvd emulation software? Steam is one of the most un-obtrusive anti-piracy systems in existance. Its hardly thier fault that your computer is corrupt.

According to the steam website, there are an average of 3,173,227 players this month that obviously can run steam fine, so yes, it is your PC.

As was suggested further up, reinstall windows to clear whatever is broken, and steam will work fine. Then you can bitch about steam. Or do you believe it should be up to valve to fix your PC for you as well?

I hate these people who get all over dramatic about a few corrupted files...do you know how many times I've redownloaded steam games?? a crapload of times :)

Although Steam is annoying, I think its a great medium for games distribution, and I actually like the fact I can launch any of my games from 1 application, so get over yourself, and just love the games.

Nuff said...

The positives far outweigh the negatives when it comes to Steam, despite the odd hiccup now and then. The OP clearly isn't that clued in if they think this is the Steam support forum.

ololol steam doesn't work and as such it can't work for anyone else ololol

Steam has broken for me two times, and then it has veeb for more than a week - I still think it's great.

Two bucks on that OP never returns here.

I didnt even bother to read OP's message since he couldnt bother to tap the Enter key...but Steam has never busted for me and Ive downloaded a half a dozen games at least a half a dozen times...if HL2's download is too much for you, then install from the CDs and just download the updates through Steam...

Exactly, and the backup facility is there to help you do that :)

Wow, you and your friends have some great times, can I please come hang with you guys...

Anyone else think this thread would be about one of his friends dying?

However you look at it, Steam is still young and undergoing development.

Its pretty much the first software that allows you to download games direct from the programmers, so it will only get better with time.

Yeah, but more than likely you have to have a CD to run every single one of those games. With steam they know you didn't steal the games (hopefully) so they let you launch them immediately.

And i hope the thread starter dies of heart attack, being in a coma, then waking up to have a stroke.

Cause I wasted about a minute of my life reading that double paragraph. >:|

Not all of them. Just the more professional stuff. The rest goes straight to dekstop icons; for me at least.

Hm, true. If you import a "non steam game", I don't suppose it bypasses that though does it? (like a mini image)
