stay safe, oh and duty/honour is not worth your life

Have a good time, im sure you'll learn a lot :)

Keep safe

Good luck mate, take care. I had a cousin who was in the Navy, he really enjoyed it.

Yes, because that's what he will be doing for an Advanced Electronics and Computer Field career. Read the entire post next time, and even then read/look more into the military/Army before you go off on some pseudo politicial correctness crap and you'll soon see that it's not all combat and infantry.
It's just as morally indefensible.

Hardly. I was going to join the Royal Engineers as a armourer/vehicle mechanic/recovery mechanic just because it intrests me. I'd get to work with vehicles you wouldn't find in your high street, not just cars like a normal mechanic would look at. Some people just want a different career choice, y'know? Do something different, get away from a generic desk life? It's not everyones dream, but it's certainly a career I'm looking into. Like I said, the Army isn't ALL fighting.

[List of soldiers] (all due respect meant, I just don't want to clog up the thread with a huge quote)

Those soldiers' unfortunate deaths aside, did any of them sign up as combat infantry to become a ''mercenary trained to help the military machine slaughter thousands in the interests of the profits of a few fat cats'' ? If so, okay, fair play. If not... well, then it has nothing to do with what we are talking about. Theres a difference between going off to shoot stuff in the call of order then to go work behind a computer or become a vehicle mechanic, etc. If you die during the process, be it freindly or non-freindly fire, well, like said, it's not the case at hand.

some of those examples were of non-combat personel ...like jessica lynch or shoshana johnson (ok neither died, but they were ****ed up pretty good, nonetheless)

and I dont see what being a mercenary has to do with the OP ..my comments were directed at him, no one else

I think you confused me with Cpt.Stern.

Either way, why you sign up doesn't make it right.

Joining the US army right now is morally equatable with stealing from a charity shop for a living.

My apologies. I thought you were posting up that list in reply to my post about joining the Armed Services as a non-combat personal. I was going to say, it didn't make much sense if it was directly posted at what I was saying.

hey what about apologies to me!! the person who was quoted? dammit I want credit where credit is due

;)

Haha, it WAS apologies to you, Solaris a post in before I could post it myself. :p

cya mate . cant say that i know you but i wish you good luck none the less. don't be a hero .

Some of you may already have known this, but I have enlisted in the U.S. Navy as an AECF(Advanced Electronics and Computer Field) for six years(possibly more). A field in which I know I'll enjoy be trained in. I ship out on the 7th of this month, which is only a few days away. I'll be stationed in Great Lakes, Illinois for both basic training and schooling. I've been training for a few weeks now in preparation for the physical training in boot camp. I'm both excited and slightly nervous for what is it to come, but I'm sure it will all be beneficial and provide great opportunities for when I'm out of the service.

I've enjoyed my time here at halflife2.net as one of my most visited forums. Great people, great laughs, great times. :)

This is joule, signing off. See you all later... much later.

I graduated boot camp dec 8th...it's easy dude. Just do what they tell you too. Good luck.

Oh and, P days are easy now, we we're marching five miles a day that first week. But now they have you in a building 2 feet away from medical.

Oh and, don't worry about PT, you'll be alright. Although the track they have at freedom hall where you run the PFA is all kinds of ****ed up. You'll know what I'm talking about the first PFA you do.

Don't think I've got anymore " Oh ands"

So yeah, good luck shipmate.

I'm a nuke MM, 5 weeks into A school atm.

If the US military ceased to exist right now, the collapse of Western civilisation would probably be upon us.
STFU Solaris, you ungrateful twat.

Best of luck joule.

yes because civilization hinges on the US' ability to **** up other countries willy nilly

yes because civilization hinges on the US' ability to **** up other countries willy nilly

Yes, obviously the US military exists for the sole purpose of "****ing up other countries willy nilly".
It isn't a safeguard for any one of us, nor does it ensure Western dominance on the world stage and a continued supply of oil (like it or not, both of those things are necessary for our continued survival...stop being a consumer or don't bitch). It's just a machine of pure, unadulterated evil.

I had to sell my soul to Mr Bush and Oil when I signed up

peacekeeping/humanitarianism doesnt factor in anywhere now does it? ...then why is one of the stated reasons for being in iraq humanitarian?

It isn't a safeguard for any one of us, nor does it ensure Western dominance on the world stage

how does that in any way affect my quality of life? or that of my family or even fellow countrymen?

and a continued supply of oil

bullshit, the majority of oil comes from either Saudi Arabia or canada ..both allies of the US ..military might has nothing to do with how they get oil

(like it or not, both of those things are necessary for our continued survival...stop being a consumer or don't bitch).

so let me get this straight ..I should not comment on the US because hey they supply our oil? we have a symbioltic existance, economically we cant do without each other, so they need us as much as we need them

It's just a machine of pure, unadulterated evil.

yes because I'm constantly saying america is "evil" ..you know, cuz I'm just a morally centred person who sees everything in terms of right and wrong, black and white ...isnt that usually your role?

peacekeeping/humanitarianism doesnt factor in anywhere now does it? ...then why is one of the stated reasons for being in iraq humanitarian?

Because people will swallow that touchy-feely shit, why do you think?
Nation-states always act in their own best interests, as well they should. The difference between them is how far they're willing to go in order to achieve their goals.

how does that in any way affect my quality of life? or that of my family or even fellow countrymen?

Again, I was being sarcastic, as if that wasn't obvious. What should be obvious is how your quality of life would be affected if the West was not the dominant world power and we didn't have the US military to protect us.

bullshit, the majority of oil comes from either Saudi Arabia or canada ..both allies of the US ..military might has nothing to do with how they get oil

It does right now, but what about in thirty years time?
None of us really knows the true reasons for Iraq, but I would bet that securing scarce resources for the future is right up there.
Not saying it's right, it's just life. At least we're attempting to do good at the same time, which is more than you can say for any of our enemies.

so let me get this straight ..I should not comment on the US because hey they supply our oil? we have a symbioltic existance, economically we cant do without each other, so they need us as much as we need them

Comment all you like...but when you level the same criticisms at the US that you accuse people of being a racist for levelling at the Middle East, you make yourself look like an utter douchebag.

yes because I'm constantly saying america is "evil" ..you know, cuz I'm just a morally centred person who sees everything in terms of right and wrong, black and white ...isnt that usually your role?

No, that's not my role. But you're almost obsessed with the USA. You must spend all day searching for things to dig at the US about (don't you have work to do?), but nary a word to be said on the ****ed up problems of the Middle East.
America isn't right. Britain isn't right either. We're just a lot less wrong. More importantly, neither of these countries are trying to kill me, and both are allowing me a comparatively excellent quality of life.
More than I can say for DaMaN's buddies in retard-land/the Middle East.

Good luck to you !

Can i have my games back??? J/k :p

Make sure those games go to good use , or give them to others .

well shoshana johnson wasnt infantry ...jessica lynch was a supply clerk ...
Since the war in Iraq doesn't have any static front lines, anyone who's on the ground, in country, can technically be considered down range, thinking otherwise is just wrong. However, he's enlisting in the Navy, and he's not applying for BUD/S or EOD school, so no worries.

Anyway, good luck Joule.

edit: I guess I really shouldn't be surprised that Stern managed to turn this into a big political debate, but God help me, I wish that just once he could go an entire thread without multi-quoting someone to death...

edit 2: Solaris, just shut the **** up...

I'm enlisting as an E1(lowest possible rank) and my paygrade will be about $1300/month. Rank and pay increase the longer I serve.

:)

And you get free housing/meals, right? That's a lot, from what I think (although my knowledge in these matters are quite limited :p).

Aww, I just can't wait till I'm eligible. They should bring the old 14+ limit back. :(

And you get free housing/meals, right? That's a lot, from what I think (although my knowledge in these matters are quite limited :p).

Correct. Everything is pretty much taken care of and paid for while you're in the service. So with the money I earn it's basically all going to savings.

Well I'm afraid us Politics goers here have pretty much established that the war in Iraq was based on a pack of lies and we are an occupying force who should withdraw. The US military hasn't to my knowledge done a decent thing since WW2, I'm sure theres been a few, but since WW2 it would be very hard to justify any military action the US has done. So, in full knowledge of his countries shameful role in world politics, in full knowledge of the horrors and atrocities it has committed in Iraq he signs up to help. If that isn't immoral I don't care what is. Sure, it's probably a great thing for him, he'll learn skills have fun get some qualifications, but the cost of that is ultimately millions of civilians and freedom fighters killed by American armed forces and millions more by American foreign policy.

I know I couldn't live with myself if I joined the armed forces, I'm surprised anybody can.

Freedom fighters.
I was actually going to spend some time on this one, but you really ruined it by making reference to "freedom fighters". Oh, the naivete...

You're just such an ignorant asshole, I don't even know how to respond to this...

Bye Joule. Good luck out there. I'll expect to hear from you the day you get back.

Dude, shut up guys, Solaris is fighting for freedom.

Fight the power, man. The internet is mightier than the sword.

Where can you find pleasure
Search the world for treasure
Learn science technology
Where can you begin to make your dreams all come true
On the land or on the sea
Where can you learn to fly
Play in sports or skin dive
Study oceanography
Sign up for the big band
Or sit in the grandstand
When your team and others meet

In the navy
Yes, you can sail the seven seas
In the navy
Yes, you can put your mind at ease
In the navy
Come on now, people, make a stand
In the navy, in the navy
Can't you see we need a hand
In the navy
Come on, protect the motherland
In the navy
Come on and join your fellow man
In the navy
Come on people, and make a stand
In the navy, in the navy, in the navy (in the navy)

They want you, they want you
They want you as a new recruit

If you like adventure
Don't you wait to enter
The recruiting office fast
Don't you hesitate
There is no need to wait
They're signing up new seamen fast
Maybe you are too young
To join up today
But don't you worry 'bout a thing
For I'm sure there will be
Always a good navy
Protecting the land and sea

In the navy
Yes, you can sail the seven seas
In the navy
Yes, you can put your mind at ease
In the navy
Come on now people, make a stand
In the navy, in the navy

Who me?

They want you, they want you
They want you as a new recruit

But, but, but I'm afraid of water.
Hey, hey look
