Hey,

I searched this forum and did not find anything mentioning this, so here goes.

Google just came out with Google Trends, which is basically a summary of how often a term was googled as a function of time, region, or language. As an example, you can search for Half life 2 and see when the most people googled that word, where they lived and so forth... (http://www.google.com/trends?q=half+life+2&ctab=1&date=all&geo=all)

Now being of a very dirty mind, the second term I entered (I cannot tell you the first, I do want to go to heaven) is sex. And the funniest thing is that muslim regions hold the record for googling the term 'sex'. I mean no offense by this, I'm just quoting a source that I find reliable. The first problem with this that I see is that there are far fewer computers in muslim countries than in Europe/America, so either google trends takes this into account or those mustlim countries (even with the limited amount of computers) are still googling that term more. I'm not really suprized.

Next I tried my last name, and it turns out that the most time this term was googled when somebody with my last name apologized just before he got the chair.

And the last thing I did was the vatican. The volume went from near zero to a huge amout of traffic during the end of Paul II raign and went back down to zero as soon as the new pontif was appointed.

I did a lot more, but I don't want to spoil the fun. It's a great research tool and it provides a lot of information.

Have fun all.

PS: I do not work for Google. Oh shit, they told me not to say that in the instructional video.

How do they account for different languages. For example, the search term "health" would be different depending on your language. Does google trends account for this. Hmmmmm, cause this would bias the trend to the language of your search term.

Huh thats really neat, kind of like Googlefight but not just based on the number of results.

[16:15] <@Raeven0> Poland, however, searches "chuck norris" more often than the next three contenders combined, and US is only #6

[16:23] <@Raeven0> Denmark, Australia, US, UK, and Argentina are almost tied for #1 at "bin laden"
[16:23] <@Raeven0> Curiously, Denmark is #1 for "Denmark", but #2 is none other than Pakistan :D

[16:24] <+Matrixfan> norway #1 for *******
[16:25] <+Matrixfan> while finland prefers goatse

******* represents girl of the tub.

The Swedes have been looking hardest for Duke Nukem Forever, still haven't found it yet, though :p

People in the small Canadian town of Fredericton were most concerned with finding new jobs

And finally people in Tampa, FL were most frequently looking to end it all

"o rly" appears halfway through 2005 and Norway tops the bill

OMFG it just suddenly appeared halfway 2004!
Remember that acronyms like these probably stand for organisations of some sort in some country, so you shouldn't be surprised that Romania got top for OMFG (O.M.F.G.) or that Poland got top for pwn. For all we know that could mean 'dog' in Polish ;)

I recall going over to a friends house last month to discover he had been looking up midget porn on google. :| It was... odd

Birmingham United Kingdom wins regular porn search.

Star Wars fan really like their internet. I guess trekkies are more into the conventions.

And google finally settles the contest between jesus and god, it seems god is winning (at least outside the US): http://www.google.com/trends?q=jesus,+god&ctab=1&geo=all&date=all

India leads the world by a huge margin on searching for std's (*play porn theme here*):http://www.google.com/trends?q=std&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all

And say whatever you want, we are good old horney monkeys. Sex beats god by about a 5 to 1 margin: http://www.google.com/trends?q=god,+sex&ctab=1&geo=all&date=all

And just to top it of, it seems that forplay came into existance early in 2004 (http://www.google.com/trends?q=forplay&ctab=1&geo=all&date=all).
