Gordon grabs a note (and you see his hands)

It would be better if...

  • You see Gordon's arms/hands when he grabs stuff.

Yes he does.. well, not in the actual game..
This thread is about

>>Why Didn't Valve take their time to program a "simple" (grab-engine)..

>> And would it be a good thing if you see gordons body and arms in the game..??

Before you post and flame.. NO IM NOT COMPLAINING...
im simply asking a question..

Now let me explain my simple idea about the (grab engine).. MADE UNDER 3 MINS... :|
it's all in the Pic... This is a very simple idea.. But VALVE (i know they have awesome programers) could have done this better...

You have alot of free time my friend..

If you made all of that for this thread.. then, uh.. wow.

Dude, that's a crazy step-by-step--I know! They should put that on one of those, "How to jump from a runaway vehicle," shirts. They'd make millions.

dang ... and that did not take u under 3 minutes ... and its too late ... cause hl2 is done ... duh

I think you are a complete troll most of the time.. but that was some hilarious shit. I am still laughing at that. Nice job :D

"grab engine" :naughty:

on topic, i voted for seeing arms/hands which i'm sure is how it is kinda. i dunno.

Great idea shes. I hope you either mod it, or incorporate it in the game your company is working on...

"grab engine" is hard.
gotta set grab points for every possible object, then use IK (inverse kinematics) to get the hands to go to the right pos. IK is hard to do in real-time.
then there will be special cases that look lame and have to be fixed with special-case code.
all up - lots of work for not much gain.

still, someone will do it in the next few years.
but not for HL2.

EDIT: hey that pic wasn't there when i read this first was it She?
i just wrote what u drew. the hard bit is making the hands go to the grab spots and look convincing.

I think they tried something liek that in Tresspasser, and it didn't work out very well.. Quite often, it would take alot of practise only to keep the objects in one's hands (since making a physics-engine just for looks seems incredibly useless..)
Also that would waste a lot of processingpower for doing something unnecessary.

"You can mod it" :p j/k. definitly should see arms. Nice graphic, She ;)

Jacob: No. Not like trespasser. We're talking computer controlled arms,. not user controlled arms. And it would not take much processor power at all.

VALVe could have done this.

You never know, they might have tried it.

But it would likely just come off looking like Gordon is handicapped and doesnt have full control over his hands oO

I like the idea because it enhances the realism but I guess its fine as is.

so how do you get it from clipping through walls and game geometry when you get too close? Every other game has the hands simply going through the wall.

hmm.. it's already fixed isn't it?
I mean, the Manipulator can grab objects, and those objects are
floating infront of gordon.. and they are not clipping are they?..

she is that avatar an actual picture of you??? and how old are u? and how old is that girl

I really don't care.

It's fine how it is.

It won't affect gameplay at all either way.

It looks like with your method you would have to place specific "holding" points on each and every single physics object. Like someone else said, it would inevitably create some weird looking positions for some objects and would need special case code.

I think a better approach would be to make objects have a center of gravity (maybe they already do) and give each arm, and perhaps each finger, some amount of weight capacity and friction. Then make the arms pick opposite points on the object that are equal from the center of gravity.

It will be interesting to see how DOG picks up objects in the game.

She has a "manipulator" gun.. fixed

No,there is a screenshot from the CD that came with PCgamer (I think) that
showed DOG picking up a car with its hands. It was holding the car over its head. I figure they just put sticky bind points on the ends of dog's arms and they attach to objects, probably with some clipping.

Another news flash! There are no mirrors in HL2!

I'm beyond caring for missing features.

exactly ...

I guess if they had done simple holding/throwing animations like DX2 it could work, but I do not really care either way.

And I'm actually glad you don't see gordon's legs or chest. This was a feature I always wanted to see in an FPS until I played Breakdown and Riddick on Xbox. It's horribly disorienting because it treats the FOV like you are controlling the player's neck rather than their actual upper body and arm. I don't want to look down and see myself holding a weapon... I want to look down so I can shoot stuff...

too much free time i agree, this is sad

I agree, but settle down. :)

No!! If we settle down Vivendi will exploit us!!

"Oh they've gone quiet...delay for 3 months heehehe those stupid hobos!!"

GET ON THEIR BACKS!! HASSLE THEM!!

Lol, damn, Mr-Fusion, don't have a heart attack.
Back on topic, that was a humerous drawing, that actually made some sense. You should mod it into the Source engine! You'd make Gabe proud!

wow She, all that just for this thread?
yeah..someone definitely has too much time to waste :p

Shenmue had something like that it was good but not perfect and don't know if it was just pre animated or done on the fly but it was definately convincingly done.
