Gordon the bolemic

When I first played halflife 1 (an eight year old with a mature rated game), the loading screen of gordon with a shotgun in his hev was forever burned into my mind. I rember thinking, "This guy is a pencil neck." We have never seen him out of his hev to see if he really is a skinny mit grad but now we know. Freeman (acording to hl2's phisicys) weighs between 78 and 99 lbs.

After jumping out of the window from barney's "interogation" you see two cinder blocks, I threw these through the door before loading. After the load I tediously carried two blocks through the plaza and over the fence to the playground. This was my moment of discovery. According to online cinderblock venders, the cinderblock weighs 33 lbs. I stack four on one side (the two I had carried and the two already there) and jumped on the other side. There was no effect. Only a slight effect happened with three. Gordon easily outweighed 2. I then used a paint can (sources say this weighs 12 lbs) and things were more even. Therefor, heroic crowbaring gordon prbly weighs a meassly 85 lbs. An inspiration to all the little guys out there.

Note: This does not include his hev

Er... first off 33LBS is not the weigth of a cinder-block, and it's a game... this isn't meant to be "OMGZ!11 UB3R REALISTIC!1111111"

Your reasoning illogical!! beeboopbeep kill kill kill destroy destroy!

just through everything on it...........cinderblocks do not weigh 33lbs........

You do in Blue Shift. I can't remember his build now. He was wearing the same clothes as all the other scientists. I think you see him on a moniter at the start.

oh ya. He is riding in the tram.

The cinderblock weight of 33 lbs is an average. I found (from internet cinderblock suppliers) starting at 24 and going up to 42 pounds.

the monkey: 171.6 kilograms-217.8 kilograms

For the rest of you. It is just something interesting that I found out using a little creativity. Dont pound on me, I am just pointing out something I find to be hillarious.

You’ve done your home work. I appreciate that.
My only criticism is that hl2’s physics are not the laws of Newton verbatim. In which case… the developers just tweaked everything until it “felt right.” So comparing the weight of one object to another isn’t going to give reliable results like it does in our actual reality. Still interesting work…
Gordon is a theoretical physicist… good bet he is a “pencil neck”… That’s why we love him….

Your probably correct and they probably made it that way on purpose.

BTW since this is a truly real physics engine, I'm sure they made the cinderblocks a realistic weight.

Realistic weights in video games have been used since the early 1990's when Ultima 6 came out. They individually weighed every item in the game, in real life, and then transferred the real weight into the game. There's no reason to think that in 2004, Valve wouldn't do the same thing.

Freeman being a theoretical physicist and a weakling is exactly what they want.. He's like every nerds hero.. He's a wimp but strap him into the HEV suit and he's the man.

You see somewhere else aswell, on a moniter
The shooting range?
1 or 2 scientists push a table past the camera. Keep watching for a few secs and there's Gordon

Maybe his HEV suit makes him weigh less?
I think they would have just tweaked Gordon's actual mass to make the game feel better. Not because he is a pencil neck or anything.

Now, I'm not trying to be hatin', but your math seems to be a bit off ;). There is no way that 99 pounds or the whereabouts can correspond with 171-217 kg. 200 kg would put Gordan at 440 lbs, making him on-par with a small sumo wrestler. You multiplied by 2.2 when you should have divided. The correct figure in kgs is approximately 45 kgs +/- 5 kgs. You can thank me on monday :D

His HEV made him heavier than normal including all the weapons he carry.

Good catch… I think in pounds so I didn’t even bother to read his conversions but yeah… I can never communicate effectively about weight and distance with any of my foreign friends… Why don’t we just go metric for god’s sake?
Now why is it that nobody else has pointed this out much earlier? I know everybody here isn’t American!

Well, he said he tested this in the playground at the beginning, I bet it wouldn't have made a difference but Gordon wasn't wearing the HEV suit while he was at the playground in City 17.

cinderblocks are heavier in the future

cinderblocks are heavier in the future ... because of alien technology

lol, somehow I doubt that. Just because aliens are now involved doesn't mean that everything is changed. Even if we were to assume that aliens redesigned every facet of society, wouldn't it be logical for cinderblocks to become lighter, seeing how everything that they employ in HL2 is extremely efficient? Nice try, though...
