It's almost 2004, so what's your favorite game of 2003. Mine was Call of Duty. There was no other single player experience like it. It was so intense.

Max Payne 2!!! Nothing like nearly unlimited ammo and many bad guys to stick the bullets in in slo-mo!!! :sniper:

I also enjoyed C&C Generals.

Knights of the Old Republic!! same reasons as Pendragon

I have GOT to get that game. Is there a demo?

yes, yes, yes.... and there is no demo as of now.... but u don't need one, just listen to teh praise!!!

CoD and KotOR are my games of the year

The only game that's grabbed my attention so far and kept it is Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, I nominate that! Great game.. always loved this genre; FFT is my favorite game of all time, Tactics in close second.

Past that, I'd say DX:IW, I haven't played it yet (waiting to beat FFTA first), but I loved the demo and I've played maybe 20 minutes of the game, gonna be fun (I kinda wanna beat DX first, but I can't see myself doing that when DX:IW is there as temptation)

DX:IW is a temptation to u? :|.... wierdo

Yeah, poor year for PC games.
KOTOR without any doubt.

Two more good games are Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.

Vice City was pretty good, but it lacked the originality the series had with GTA3. Sure, it may have had good gameplay, helicopters, and motorcycles, but it wasn't really original. KotOR, on the other hand, was a great step forward for RPGs and for games in general.

Uhm, care to explain how it was a step for RPG in general? You said you are not RPG fan, than how do you know if KOTOR did anything original? KOTOR is a good game, but if you played one Bioware RPG, you played them all. Nothing original, Good vs. Evil , bla bla bla. Still a good game.

I just said they were two good games. Not GOTY. RoTK is amazingly HARD.

It was a step for RPGs in general because of the way it included a beautiful, compelling story, but wasn't linear. The story, while maintaining quality and coherence, allowed the player to wander and experience the world as they saw fit. It was filled with optional, story-building quests, and the settings were all vivid and original. I know KotOR is original because the whole reason I haven't been much of an RPG fan is because every game before KotOR was doing the things that I love KotOR for not doing.

Beyond this being the worst thing you can say about a game developer, especially a developer of story-based games, all games are about Good vs. Evil. I can't think of a single game that doesn't amount to that in one form or another.

Ha, good story? Sorry, but I save damn universe in each new game I get, against some Evil, which plans to take over the world, for what purpose, nobody knows. When asked, why do you Evil want to take over the world, it says “I want to be a ruler of this universe”. Ha.. The only good thing was about it, is a twist, which I guessed way before, so it didn’t really shocked me (yes, I pay attention to the small clues in the story, left by developers, but many these days don’t). But than again, it is Star Wars universe, what could I possible expect from such boring place? I don’t know, I can’t take worlds, with Evil and Good separated like that, seriously. I cringed in the end, when I was pronounced the saver of the universe. Eh, whatever. Now, where is my money?

I agree, you could visit different planets in the different time and it was really nice touch. I also liked of some dialogue changes. But in no way it is original, play Fallout. Did the same thing (go anywhere you want, has different endings depending on your Karma/choices) long time ago.

I recommend you to play Planescape: Torment, old game, a lot of reading, not much of fighting/looting, but one of the greatest RPG out there. Plus, the main point of the game SPOILER
is to lose your immortality. Ironic, isn’t? In so many games you see Evil trying to become immortal, and here you understand that this immortality comes with a price. Everyone you love, trust, suffer because of it. Great game, with great storyline, and great NCP interaction. (not just “I will help you in the fight against EVIL, because it’s Evil.. UH, AH! Whatever”.)

AGAIN, I LIKED THE GAME, but it is not original in any way.

o_O;; Warcraft 3 and the expansion, Frozen Throne...
Call of Duty was great...
Generals was good...

Was Rise of Nations a 2003 game? if so, that...

Oooh, and Unreal Tournament 2003.

I sense a bit of conflicting messages there. You criticize KotOR for something you say every game does, yet, being a gamer, you must like some of them. What's wrong with KotOR there?

Nothing wrong with KOTOR, I voted it for GOTY as you. I can enjoy the game, even if it brings nothing original to the genre (few can). KOTOR was great experience, I just don’t like comment you made :) Maybe it was original for you, because you don’t have a lot of experience with RPG games, but not for me.

Perhaps it just wasn't for you then. While I don't think the SW universe is great, it certainly can do some fun things in my opinion. I guess that's a matter of tastes.

I agree, I was spoiled by other games/books :)

Therefore, while anyone one facet of KotOR might not be original, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and the whole's originality is greater than the sum of its parts' originality.

I have no idea what you just said.

However, given that we both liked the game, it seems futile to continue arguing. I just liked it and held it in higher regard than you I guess

Agree. Still a great game.

Too bad HL2 couldn't be my game of the year. I doubt it will be next year.

My list for 2003:
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
Call of Duty
WarCraft III & The Frozen Throne

What I meant is if I'm playing Deus Ex, I'd rather be playing Deus Ex: Invisible War, since it looks alot nicer and is more fun, IMO (not saying DX isn't fun, but, I can't get myself to play through all of it.. I got a fifth the way through the game and kinda stopped)

HL1 wasn't exactly revolutionary in terms of features for its time, yet it still won numerous GOTY awards.. who's to say HL2 won't be the same type of case?

Pendragon said:
He's referring to the other games that look to be similarly revolutionary that are also set to release next year, like S.T.A.L.K.E.R, Doom 3, etc. HL2 will likely still be the game we all want it to be, but it will lose some of its lustre in comparison.
Ah, lol, I hadn't even noticed he said "my game of the year," I thought he said GOTY.. my bad :x

Knights of the Old Republic, along with DX: IW, MP2, and a couple of others.

I didn't think anyone would mention DX:IW. Is it really that good? While I've heard that initial hatred was unfounded, it was still only a so-so game. What d'ya think?
I just can't get enough of playing with the dynamic lights and shadows.. hours of fun :) lol

It's awesome Pendragon. Everything you do affects what happens in the later parts of the game. It's so cool. And you get to choose who to work for. It is worth the $50.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Deus Ex 2: Invisible War (just played it a few minutes ago for the first time :D :D :D).

Max Payne 2 is also tied with these too... ahhhh, too many choices!!!!1

I think that Call of Duty is definately GOTY material, when I'm playing it it's simply great. But it just isn't drawing me back and I don't feel too much motivation to progress through the game. I'm pretty sure this is because it's a WWII game. The game itself has all the emotion, intensity and gameplay it needs, and then some. It's just that the WWII setting has been milked down to nothingness. Same places, same guns, same enemies, same objectives, same story. The game exceeds my expectations; my reaction to it doesn't.

MP2 and WC3. Yeah they were great games. But nothing that made me go "OMFG WOW"

I would say Deus Ex: IW, but I feel like I'm forgetting something. The bugs really piss me off (random crashes, deltes saves, reboots computer, loading issues, lack of resolution support). However the game, the graphics, gameplay. even the DVD case it comes it really impresses me. I also love the amazing amount of replay it has for a Single player game. The only thing stopping me from playing it over and over are the terrible glitches. Heres one a lot of people should disagree with, but I also enjoyed Unreal 2. It has a rather good single player, fun weapons, and revolutionary graphics for its time. Not to mention the recent release of multiplayer!

KotOR would be my pick. :)

It showed the gaming world that you don't need multiplayer support to have fun.

Wow... saved me some typin'! That's exactly how I feel...

CoD, MP2, DX:IW and KOTOR seem to be the picks at the mo. I've only tried MP2, clocked and LOVED it, so that's my pick. It's a pretty flawless gaming experience, although a little short, like CoD, just from what I've heard. I've tried both CoD demos and played multiplayer at the Icaf and I LOVE it, so that'd tie MP2 despite never playing the SP game well and proper. KOTOR looks awesome, but I'm not into RPGs that much so I wouldn't be able to judge it fairly. DX:IW is getting mixed opinions so I won't go there till I try it myself :) And Vice City pwns.

Halo and Vice City for PC (with regards to Halo's performance issues, I am still to experience any problems :p )

Halo and possibly even VC didn't come out in 2004, so aren't eligible as ports alone :p Well, they shouldn't be atleast.

i still hate DX:IW. i think it's nowhere near GOTY material. Halo PC is a better candidate for GOTY than DX:IW and that's saying a lot (my opinion of course i respect your opinions as well).

naturally my GOTY for 2003 is KOTOR. blows everything else out of the water.

Now I must say that if and I mean if KoTOR had come out in my country (portugal) and I had played it I would probably say it was GOTY. But fromwhat I've seen I must say that Halo and DX2 was a dissapointtment and so was GTA:VC. Sure it had all those things to do bur the lack of originality and awful graphics just screwed VC, Halo and DX-IW for me.
Now PoP: Sands of Time- pretty good but no GOTY material.

Now my vote goes to - Splinter Cell. That's right Splinter Cell. Why???
Been playing for years Metal Gear 1 and 2 and they sucked! How could anyone gv 90\100 to that !!!
Then came SC.

SC is still the only game reprodusing a stealth enviromment with nightvision and thermal vision correctly, immersing Tom Clancy's story and awsome graphics.

That's why my 2004 most expected game is also Sc : pandora tomorrow.

I've still gotta get Max Payne 2. I heard its really short, so I'll wait till its like 20 or 30 bucks before I pick it up.
