Taking some inspiration from Gran Turismo HD, SCEI revealed that the upcoming racing title Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will be released for free on the PlayStation Network for the PS3. It looks like they were toying around the idea of attaching a price tag but for now, it'll be free.

Among other things, Prologue will feature 16-player online races, 50 cars, 5 tracks and support for 1080p resolution. Looks like there will be more car customizations too -- it's been reported that one car (a 2000 TVR Tuscan Speed 6) was available in 21 different colors. It's been also revealed that Prologue will debut car damage to the game series.

In the meantime, treat your eyes to some true gaming bliss with Prologue's GC '07 trailer. The game will be released in Japan in October, but a U.S. release date is still sometime in 2007.

50 cars, 5 tracks and customization? You can almost sell that as a whole game.

GT5 and MGS4 are the only reasons why I'd regret buying a 360 instead of a PS3.

50 cars and 5 tracks for free is better than a slap in the face tbh...

how are going to be the customizations?

That's great news. I love free stuff. I probably wouldn't have gotten it otherwise as I'm not a huge GT fan and even if I was I'd wait for the full game, as this will be obsolete whenever that comes out.

Polython Digital have never been a games company I really liked. They never polish of there games. They are 100% car fanatics yes, but they don't make good games. Primative AI and unbalanced gaming. I hate to think how anoying it is going to be to make races fair on GT5 when playing online. Yes the game looks absolutly stunning and Polython Digital make amazingly acurate car models. But honestly the only reason they are adding damage and better AI is because Forza Motorsport did it and without it they would be looked down on. Oh and not to mention they have already stated the damage won't be in the initial release of the game. Its going to be a free downloadable addon or patch.

Basiclly the company has always focused way to much in areas of games that honestly I don't care about.

I would be inclined to agree with you in general, but I still think they're the best racing game developer on the market. I don't particularly like racing games, but when I first got GT3 I was pretty addicted to the constant drive to gain new cars/upgrades and enter new races. I've probably played it and enjoyed it a lot more than any other racing game, though that isn't saying a hell of a lot.

I disagree about the online portion though. That will be awesome. The whole idea of building the best car and pitting it against other people's cars that they spent so much time on is brilliant, probably far more fun than the actual racing ever would be.

I don't think many people play it, but honestly I have had much more fun playing Forza Motorsport 2 arcade mode than I did in the buying and upgrading area. I love buying new cars and upgrading them but I found it got to the point where I just made my car to good and won very easily or didn't have enough cash to get it good enough and lost. In Arcade I was part of the pack all the time, constantly fighting for my position. Its nice to experiance a racing game where you can go around a corner in a pack and not really have problems with it turning into a car wreak. Although saying that I must admit it still happens.

I think the biggest problem with racing games is the fact not everyone is using a stearing wheel so one nudge of the controller can throw you into another cars back spinning them out. It takes a lot of skill to average out turning properly rather than just tapping the stick as you go around a long fast corner. Causing obvious anoying problems.

Good thing it's free. I wouldn't buy a photo-realistic game that's about as fun as nailing your cock to a moving lorry.
