I'm in serious need of an upgrade to my Radeon 9550.

Can any of you lovely people help me please?

  • I have ~£200
  • Intel Celeron CPU 2.40 GHz, 512 MB of RAM (will upgrade this to 1GB)
  • AGP 8x (Not PCI-E)
  • Doesn't need to be too future proof as I am, hopefully, getting a whole new rig around this time next year.

I basically want it to be able to play Source games (in particular Lost Coast) at high quality (preferably with AA) at 1024x768. I was thinking of a run-of-the-mill 6800 or 6600GT, but wanted your opinions first.

Thanks.

You could get a X800XL for around £200. The card will be fast enough for Source games (not sure about lost cost with teh HDR) but I would say that your cpu will slow it down but upgrading the ram will give you a boost too.

Yeah, I thought the processor would limit it.

My current 9550 can just about handle HDR (5~10fps) with everything down low, so playing Lost Coast on medium with a reasonable fps rate would be quite an advance.

I would say a 6600GT (I have one) but they have some seriously stupid issues with BF2.

you would probably want an ati card if you want to play source games. i recommend a x800xl

but if u want bf2 and hl2 u should go to the 6600 gt right? otherwise just for hl2 the 800xl will do it?

Hmm, what sort of issues does it have?

I was planning on getting BF2, is it playable?

Well, I have the X800XT and Lost Coast plays perfectly at 1600x1200 with everything on full.
