Now im having a look for, who has the best graphics card, I am wondering if u could post a Pic, of the hl2 graphics engine showing its full potential

It would have to be almost the same type of picture otherwise you'd get a load of lovely but useless pictures which would not help you at all
Specify a scene or area so you can compare like with like

hmm a Combine V Rebel Scene would be nice, Or a scene Showing the water and some nice scenerny, You can use Garrys Mod, If u want to make some nice Pics

AMD 3500+
1 GB RAM
ATI RADEON 9550 128 MB
game played fine

this is all in-game rendering :) That gmod distance blur is really something.

Distance blur looks awesome, how do you use it ingame. I got gmod but i haven't seen the distance blur in action, i got a 9800se

I have 2gb ram 3.6ghz p4 and radeon x850xt - ill get a pic in a little bit

Does anyone have a problem that when you turn the settings all the way up, your screen shots are just black? It happens to me and the game does fine but the screens are blank and solid black. Any ideas what it is?

I'm guessing you've accidentally set the screenshot quality too low.

type this in the console:

jpeg_quality 100

I *think* that's what the cvar's called, might be slightly different, or you might have a different problem.

you know what someone should do, take a screenshot, then strafe right just bareely, the distance between someones eyse, then take another screenshot.

Then they can be arranged side bt side for a 3d view of the HL2 world.

edit, got one made

what you have to do is cross your eyes, each of the left and right images will split intow two different images, you have to merge two of these images (the left picture moving right and the right picture moving left) if done properly you sohuld see a 3d halflife 2 image.

I fgind it's easier to merge them with your head at a distance then move towards the screen keeping your images merged.

With better gfxcards you will (mostly) only gain extra FPS, not better imagequality.

Wow that's not true. So so so so so very false. Like a church bell:

WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! YERRONG! YERRONG! YERRONG!

If you move up from a dx8.1 to a dx9 card look at the difference. Pixel and Vertex shaders. Mmm. Whack on 16xFSAA and 8xAF. Oh baby (bye fps, though). And just for the hell of it, compare the compressed textures squashed into 64 or 128mb to what can be put on a 256mb card.

And, not hl2 specific, but programmable GPUs mean things like soft shadows are available.

This is for real-time stuff. If you were a bit of a fool you COULD implement all these nice effects in software and spit them out through a shitty old card. But 1 frame/hour doesn't really make much sense. If you didn't care about interactivity, you'd use ray tracing and radiosity anyway.

firecrack, there are several threads about what you've suggested.
