Iron Maiden's Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. I can see why it got 99% on the review.

The title track's instrumental is amazing, I love it... it's not boring at all, I wish there was more.

I'd give it 98% because I wish there were more songs. :(

And The Clairvoyant, wow, I love this song... it's almost... spiritual sounding.

I like Infinite Dreams better, but Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is my favorite.
 
Yeah, every song is good on that album, but personally I prefer "Somewhere in Time".
 
Crushenator introduced me to Dragonforce - Valley of the Damned album, speed metal, and holy crap, is it FAST.

I listened to the title track (still listening to all of it) and 2 seconds into it I was like, "Holy ****ing shit! This song rules." It's really really good. Perhaps it won't last a long time, but it's amazing nonetheless.
 
Yeah, Seventh Son is GOOD, but I Don't think the best ever. I would have to put Anthrax's "Persistance of Time" over that... but Seventh Son is a KILLER album. Evil That Men Do, easily and hands down, the best track.
 
IMO, Emperor's "Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire and Demise" is one of the greatest albums ever made.

the best heavy metal album of all time is first album from Black Sabbath ...and Maiden's Number of The Beast a close second

Anyway, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is a great album definitely, whether you think it to be the best is subjective as is everyone's opinion!

I consider Black Metal a different genre to Heavy Metal. Though I suppose this thread is for "greatest Metal albums" in general. All is well ;).

It's just that comparing Black Metal to Heavy Metal is like comparing Heavy Metal to Punk, it can almost be done but not quite since they appeal to very different tastes.
 
It's too bad metal has been divided into so many categories :| Power, thrash, speed, prog, death, black, blah blah blah.

Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk

There's just something about Anthems that is simply amazing. Can't believe someone else on this board is an Emperor fan. :farmer:

Old In Flames is good, I like Whoracle and Jester Race and everything before that. I think Bodom's first album is their best... Something Wild I think it's called. But Follow the Reaper?? No way. Hatebreeder is good also, but Follow is just too cheesy for me.

But greatest metal album ever? I'd have to disagree. Those are good albums, but definitly not the greatest.

Anything of In Flames's up to Clayman is great stuff, but Whoracle and Jester Race are indeed the best. I've certainly got to disagree with you about Follow the Reaper though. Cheesy? There's a thin line between cheesy and fantastic guitar/keyboard work, and CoB definitely fall into the latter. There's literally not one weak song on the album, and each has such a distinct sound... it's just fantastic.

Tool - Aenima (maybe not 100% heavy metal, but I think it fits into the genre)

I'm not much into black and death metal stuff, so the bands You guys listed are mostly unknown to me. have to check'em out
 
Erm well if we are counting NIN as being industrial metal I would say The Fragile, apart from that it would have to be Rage Against the Mchine's self titled album

Again, it's really a matter of taste. Hatebreeder has some really great songs; Bed of Razors, Silent Night, Bodom Night, Downfall... but FTR has, in my opinion, more; Bodom After Midnight, Children of Decadence, Hate Me, Taste of My Scythe, Kissing the Shadows (as I said earlier, there's not really a weak track) as well as my two favourite CoB songs -- Follow the Reaper and Everytime I Die.

So, in my opinion, those are the two best metal albums.

The music is cool on the album but the themes of the songs are pretty weak. I think the best bodom guitar/keyboard solo is at the end of the song "hatebreeder", but nothing off Follow. Just my 2 cents.
 
I'm not big on metal, excluding a few classics, but I would say Iron Maiden's The Killers, although anything by Dragonforce is very, very cool.

I've seen Children of Bodom three or four times now live, and although they're not one of my favorites (I'm big on classic rock), and can't hold a candle to Maiden, their live show is positively exhilarating.

A lot of the stuff people consider metal now, I would (and do) consider noise pollution.

Led Zeppelin where most deffinatley metal, the foundations they made are used by every metal band today, and black sabbath started afterwards (only by a few months mind)

Rage Against the Machine ARE NOT PUNK, punk, really, did rage once moan about their girlfriends, no they didnt. They are hardrock/metal/funkmetal/rapmetal
 
Zeppelin were quite unique in that they didn't have a specific genre. They played all sorts, blues, hard rock, metal, the list goes on!

One thing, though - how can you prefer Filosofem over some of Varg's other albums? The music itself is just as good as ever, but I really dislike the distortion used on the vocals. I know the album wasn't mixed by Varg himself (as he was in prison), but I don't think he'd ask for such a thing to be done...

And after listening a couple of times to In The Nightshade Eclipse, I still don't prefer it over Anthems (though Anthems is arguably poppy), but I do appreciate the album much more than I did before.

Another addition, as well. Immortal - At The Heart Of Winter is a beautiful album.

i prefer symbolic to the sound also, but damn theres some sweet solos on the sound that just cant go unmentioned.

well filosofem was my frist burzum album, and i love chilling to it at night or when im baked because of the almost ambient sound it posseses, its unique from the other (metal) burzum albums, dont get my wrong though, i still love his ambient/neoclassical cds as well. but his other albums are still amazing none the less. i think my closed 2nd favorite is hvys lyset tar oss, very good cd.

and i get what your saying about the emporer albums as well, that shitty production just cant cut it sometimes.

i didnt think tool was really "metal" either, but i was looking through my cd collection for some favs and i saw that and had to post it! :)

Cheesy now, but probably the most well known of all the metal albums ever. I painted the cover on my bedroom wall, 7' high
 
I don't think Maiden are cheesy. Just because Maiden don't sing about depression and "real-life" problems doesn't make them cheesy!
 
To be honest its all about the Genitorturers (Flesh is the Law).

Or Tool.
