I didn't even know GTA3 was available on the Xbox, let alone Vice City or San Andreas!

San Andreas is coming out in the summer, i've just ordered GTA3 and Vice City double-pack (should be here tomorrow) :D

I prefered playing GTA3 on the PS2 instead of the PC for some reason, but just didnt like the framerate on the PS2. Hopefully the framerate will be much better on the Xbox. I can't wait!

Anyone else played GTA3/Vice City on the Xbox? How does it compare to the PS2/PC versions?

Why yes. I have the Grand Theft Auto: Double Pack for Xbox and both for the PC. The Xbox Double Pack receives many improvements in the visuals, including 480p resolution, widescreen support, improved lighting and textures. Both games are further enhanced with the use of Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound Audio. Overall, I prefer the Xbox version because of the easier and more responsive controls and enhanced audio and graphics. And you can bet that I will be getting Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas this Summer when it comes out.

I have played the PlayStation 2 versions of both games, and they are just u-g-l-y, compared to the PC and Xbox.

Read this for everything you need to know about the GTA: Double Pack.

BTW: There are no noticeable drops in framerates.

Nice one, thanks for the link ... i've not played Vice City yet so i'm looking forward to tomorrow :D

Funny, the PC version is the exact same thing in a higher resolution, they made no changes to the graphics - not exactly a huge difference. With the X-BOX version the resolution is the same as the PS2 version but they sharpened the car textures and added 3D engines, rims, and made them shinier (in case you didn't notice they're the same models in the PS2 verson of San Andreas, they just copied the development assets over) - thats the only changes.

Also, I heard theres a common glitch in the X-BOX version where people stop talking. One more thing is that everyone that has an older DVD reader in their X-BOX will have slowdown problems.

Not really, I rented the X-BOX version to test it out and own the PS2 versions. I've also used a friends disc to play both GTA's on the PC. I know what I'm talking about. If you have a new DVD drive for the X-BOX I would recommend going with that for the slight graphical improvements (althought it really comes down to which controller you prefer). Otherwise I'd stick with either PS2.

The only reason I said anything at all is because the guy made it seem like theres some huge gap between the three platforms. People don't realize that the graphical improvements made for the X-BOX version is literally a copy/paste job from San Andreas models and effects.

The only thing that keeps games alive are developer or third party mods. PC is currently heads and sholders above consoles in this department.

For that reason alone I stick to PC for games.

The draw distances on the Xbox should complete the San Andreas experience (I found sniping futile, because it wasn't drawing cars until I was close enough to use the M4).

Is the frame rate better on the box version of GTA3 than the PS2 version though?

I love the Grand Theft Auto series but am waiting untill it is released for Xbox
EDIT: I'll probably get it on PC instead if thats the best version

My brother has the PS2 version and I can't even stand to look at it..
The game the models, textures, framerate, everything hurts my eyes to look at... it's really quite awfull looking.

The Xbox versions are the better choice imo.

Not just because of the improved textures and better controls (driving needs analogue control, and auto aim makes up for lack of mouse control), but becasuse GTA is always better played on a big tv while sitting on a sofa with your mates.

Playing on a monitor just isn't the same - the city looks tiny, all the buildings and cars looking like little paper models. On a tele it becomes a sprawling metropolis, that feels solid weighty and looks great. Far more convincing.

(high resolution is only good when the detail is there to support it. GTA looks much better on the xbox on a tele than it does on my 19" montior at 1600*1200)

Sweet, well i've got a 28" widescreen at the end of my king-size bed, so I should be all set. Pretty annoyed because they (GTA3 + Vice City) didnt arrive this morning... must be delayed due to snow ;(

thanks for the info guys

Which is exactly why I can hook my pc up to my tele and have a gamepad.

That's cool too mineral, I just like the convinience of a console - and having the game designed around a pad.

Aiming on the pc version was pretty damn hard without a mouse.

Ooooh my god, been playing Vice City on my Xbox for the past 2 days, its awesome :D

I love the soundtrack, and the physics + handling of the cars seems improved from the original GTA3.

I'm also loving the bikes, specially the high performance (something600). :naughty:

Attached a screenshot (literally, a photo of the tv screen lol) of what happens when you swerve to avoid some dumb woman taking a stroll across the street at 3am ...

(i know you've probably all played gta3-vice city and know how cool it is, but im sure some still havent)...

This is way off topic but
How do you take a pic of the screen without getting the flickering screen refresh problem

In the "The first game you ever played" thread. You mentioned tapes I think.

On the PS2 version of vice city when you first start it up you see the commadore 64 screen where it says "Press play on tape"

They have that on the XBox version?

That fuggin rules.

Yeah, have that on the Xbox too :D It's so retro, got me right into the feel of the game from the start.

Best intro i've seen for any game, ever :D
