This has happened with a couple of my friends....
They have their own computers, and they have them setup so you can't login without a password. Which is fine, whatever, you don't want your roommate using it when you’re gone--I get it.
The problem arises when I try to get on their computers to just check my email, or find some funny picture I saw earlier, and they freak out and run over and turn the computer away from me while they log out and log me in on their guest account.
It used to happen lots when I went to boarding school, and would be in other people's rooms a lot--and therefore using their computers.
But this happened last night at my friend's apartment, she had gotten a new iBook. I sat down at it, just to see how pretty it was (i actually wanted to play with the widgets) and she ran over and closed the lid and pulled it away from me and logged herself out and then me in on the guest account.
It actually really pissed me off, I’d known her since 6th grade, and anything 'bad' she could have had on there...trust me I’ve seen worse. So I expressed my anger and she said, 'it's just the principle of the thing'. “What principle?” I asked…with no answer.
Well, I finished checking out the widgets, and went to watch TV. She logged back on, and after a few minutes I really did want to check my mail. So as I approached the laptop she jumped up and scampered over and logged herself out and said, 'the password for the guest is 'guest''. Yea...i got it. I finished checking my mail, and the night went on.
Through out the night, I kept making trips to the computer, not for anything important I just wanted her to keep having to log herself off and me on because it's stupid for her to freak out over something like this. She should know any picture/video on there isn't going to offend me, any bookmark wont shock me, I don't care about her 'live journal' or 'myspace', I don't care her email is open with love letters to her boyfriend.
It just really offends me when people do this, the lack of trust, the secrecy, it's all very insulting. I let people use my computer all the time and I have much more incriminating material on my computer.
Friends don’t make friends use guest accounts.
