General rule of thumb to follow is that other people's misfortune is funny as long as you can't be labled an inconsiderate ass for taking advantage of the situation.
Example here is ownage pics. Other people having bad luck = teh funnay.
Most successful jokes are at a person's expense.
The alternative is bathroom humor, leudity, and crazy anecdotes generally set in compromising situations.
Fads can also be funny, but only if the original content can be recalled by the reciever, and is not so abused it's been forcefully retired by most of the population of Earth. AYB is an example is this. It's only funny if it's new to you and you understand why it was made.

Wit is a sibling of humor, and the parent of sarcasm. A witty remark is usually intended seriously and out of truth but with undertones or intent of making another person appear foolish. This harkens back to the joke being set at another's expense.
True sarcasm makes no attempt to hide ones intent, but relies on the receiving parties possible inability to intercept it and therefore make themselves appear foolish.

I know a guy who doesn't understand 'piss and poo' jokes. He doesn't see anything funny in feces applied to jokes. It makes me so sad.
If you want to be funny, stop trying. Relax. Don't take everything seriously. Almost anything can be funny if you are willing to see it that way. And I personally prefer humour related in certain situations, funny observations, etc. to jokes that can be memorised and told again and again to new people.
