Well i've tried a couple of MMOs now, but all have put me off with the monthly fees. I've now looked at Guild Wars which doesnt have any..

I would of just played a trial to find out what it's like, but there doesn't seem to be one.

Does anyone have the game and if so, is it any good? If it's on the same level as EVE + LOTRO then i'll definetly pick it up.

This is what I did to test Guild Wars a while back...

Find a friend who has the game and ask to borrow his account for a few hours, you can download the client from the website, login with his info and the game will download areas as you explore (The client itself isn't big IIRC) them.

From my experience, it's not really what you can classify as a conventional MMO. I mean, in my limited time playing, the only area you really share with everyone in the game is basically the town. As for the actual dungeons / creeping areas / whatever, you'll basically be either alone or with a max of like (8?) players. There's also no real grind compared to most MMO's as the max levels are low (you can choose to start off immediately at max level if you wish) and there's no real 'leet' items. What you do have are a ridiculous amounts of abilities and a heavy PvP focus.

Basically, it's more like a Diablo 2 with an interactive lobby. There's probably very little (if any) similiarities to EVE and LOTRO.

It's a good game but I'm not sure how many people play it nowadays.

The quests are similar to other MMO's, but only the town areas have other users in them.

A friend of mine has it. Apparently once you reach certain level some catastrophic event occurs and the game becomes quite difficult.

It's a very good game. PvE will probably keep you interested throughout the campaign, but doesn't have much replay value. The real genius is the PvP, which is probably the best out there in any MMO-ish game. You can only have 8 out of your 150 or so skills at any given time per character, so picking a team's skills very carefully, so that they complement each other on the battlefield, is a lot of the strategy, and why the PvP is so addicting. This same mechanic is why PvE isn't quite so interesting.

There is actually a trial on fileplanet right now if I'm not mistaken. I'm playing it myself. Having joined an active guild I'm quite enjoying it.

This happens quite early, and the aftermath is 90% of the game, when it becomes normal. :)

I was only really interested in the PvP, in my opinion, it lost some of its awesomeness when they changed it after the beta testing which I was in. They changed a lot of the PvE, kind of ruined it for me. I might go on sometime if I find my CD's.

Guild Wars is one of the more fun MMO's, imho. PVE is really fun, and when you hit level 20 *The max level* the game just begins. Personally, I don't play it all the time anymore, but boy oh boy, is it fun when you do.

PvE is shit because you actually have to work with the dummies that make up most of its playerbase... but there is fun to be had in the random 4v4 arenas I guess. I have it installed still just to play that every once in a while. :p

Any chance of a link? Oh and is fileplanet the one you have to subscribe to in order to download stuff?

I did try to download the trial off the website, but all it does is install "Eye Of The North". To actually play you need this 24-digit code or something.

Yes sorry it's over. Currently there's only the subscriber exclusive, but earlier they had Prophecies for free.

Untrue. Because of the moron population, I played through the entire game with just henchmen (except the 1 or 2 ascension missions that you need a pickup group which I played through with a coupla friends). PVE is severely underrated, just because it's an online only game doesn't mean you have to play it like one.

GW PVE is Diablo / Diablo 2 single player but on a massive scale, and much more in depth. But after all the nerfing and changes it's become a shadow of what it was in the first couple of months after release... good times.

Agreed. And in Nightfall and Eye of the North, you get Heroes, who are like Henchman on steroids and are really helpful when you're short 1-2 guys.

Edit: There is a trial available on their main page.

I've played about 30mins so far, and i'm not too impressed. Other than value, I don't have a clue how this game beats LOTRO. It may be the action starts late, but if people were paying a monthly fee - that would lose the game a lot of players. Suppose they dont have to worry about people cancelling their subscriptions though :|

I don't have the urge to play like I did with LOTRO.. just find it boring.

I also think the controls are pretty bad and there's no button to jump.

Does it get better?

It gets better after the "big event".

Also, there is no jumping in the game, you don't need to.

I really don't get why not being able to jump breaks this game for so many people. You can't jump in Diablo 2 or Dungeon Siege either, and GW owes much more to those games than any MMO.

Definitely keep playing until the big event, though. Give it a chance until you start getting to the higher level stuff - that's when the strategy of the game starts to shine.

Its like, there's a little hill and you have to walk all the way round.. those little things are so fustrating

that.

**** that.

I still play it a lot though. Just got GWEN.

I hope GW2 is good. I really want a game to replace WoW that won't be made by blizzard. I was looking forward to Warhammer online but it's looking more and more like a WoW clone. Huxley looks kind of "meh". I never really gave LOTRO a fair try.

I've just passed the bit where the city is attacked. I can't really find many quests to do. I've tried to go to regent valley with 3 lvl 3 computer players, but it's too good for my lvl 6 elementalist. Where should I go to level up?

Also, is there any way you can enable names to automatically float above people's heads? I find it so hard to find traders etc. unless I click on them.

If you hold down ctrl, you get other players' names. If you hold down alt, you get npc's and important landmarks.

Continue the primary quest line to level up the fastest, it also gets you through the map faster where harder enemies are.

The best way to level up is to just do the quests. There is one quest from ...the ...god what's his name, good guy at the start of the game, starts with a T. Not Rurik, but the other good guy. Anyway, he gives you a quest, a couple other guys give you quests, in town, a guy in a caravan RIGHT outside the city gives you one, the missions in the cities right around give you ~2000 XP per win *if you get the bonus*. You can get a bunch of XP.

Thanks.

I'm upto the part where you have to retake the Northern Wall. I got through 9/10 of it, but then the guy who was also doing it with me (along with the 2 comp players) suicided into atleast 15 charrs. I now have to start again..

Couple of questions:
  • Where can you find more ranged fire attacks (like 'flare')
  • Where can you find prayers that heal your entire team (not just 1 individual)
  • What is IYO the best combination for a class?

In that mission, is that where you have to escape the charging Carr? Because not everyone had to reach back to the wall. Only one person needed to reach it back.

What are your professions, I assume Elementalist/Monk? You can find a skills trader to buy skills.

However, there is no "best" class combo, but E/Mo, W/Mo, Mo/Me (for pros) are all popular class combos.

They're talking about GW, but about all the wrong things. But I already said the PvE is horrible so that'd just be repeating myself. The fastest way to level up? Roll a freaking PvP character and actually play what's good in the game.

Just do the random arenas for a while and you'll see... if you like elementalist, play air, get a slow casting high damage projectile-throwing spell, a high damage no-projectile spell that you can cast while your projectile from previous spell flies to target, and a couple nice quick-shot spells and you have yourself a nice little start to cleaning up the trash in the random arenas and will get you some nice gladiator points (10-game winning streaks). Just add in air attunement, a resurrection signet, and some utility spells for survival (blinding flash!). If you have the right games you can stack the elite attunement with the regular air one to never run out of energy too!

Elementalist sucks, though. Don't play one. Mo/E shield of regen, Rt vengeful restoration, D/W, Me energy drain... those are some of my favorites.

For the love of god don't play a W/Mo, though. If you play a warrior you concentrate on pressure/killing not on wasting all your skill spots on keeping your dumb ass alive. Yes, healing signet is all you will ever need.

Oh I forgot to talk about GW2... I think I read a while ago that they're actually focusing on PvE mainly like with their latest shit-tastic expansion pack for GW1. I'd like to vomit in ArenaNet's suggestion box.
