gun on the dune buggy look familiar?

did anybody else notice that the gun mounted on the hood of the dune buggy in the e3 video looks strikingly similar to the gauss gun from the original hl? mostly i'm talking about that spinning piece (electromagnets?).

the beam looks different though. maybe the science team has made some upgrades...
