I'm currently helping my family prepare to ride out a hurricane. I'll report back after the storm, with pics if possible.

And I don't think Gustav is going to be "THE MOTHER OF ALL STORMS" as The NOLA mayor claimed it will be, but it still could do some damage, especially if it picks up strength again. Good luck!

You serious? It's about to be a cat 4 again, and it looks like it's going to hit NOLA head on, whereas Katrina was a cat 3 and veered off.

More of a CAT 5 but they consider it a 4 because it's 5MPH less. Watching CNN right now and people are like just freaking out. They didn't repair that levee neither, it's still pretty much the same since 3 years ago.

So, as I anticipated in my post, it picked up strength again, yes? It was a category 3 when I made my post.

I did forget about the whole head on thing, though. You've got that right. I also didn't realize Katrina was a category 3 - I thought it was 4.

Katrina on top, Gustav on the bottom. Gustav looks like a tropical mess compared to Katrina. Unless Gustav gets its shit together I can't see it being as powerful. Where the hell is the eye?

Good luck. I haven't been through a hurricane in a number of years, but it's always an interesting and fascinating experience, if somewhat frightening and humbling. Hope you and your family make out alright.
 
hopefully the eye doesn't gaze upon your interests, because if it does, your shit is fubar.

Does that matter though? 150mph+ winds are 150mph+ winds, whether or not they rotate around an eye. They're gonna **** shit up.

They only predict about 100 people might drown. I'm sure he won't be one of them.

I heard that the storm is going to go outside the city of New Orleans, which is good news but not good news for the city it will hit.

Oh don't worry. I'm sure it won't hit just one. I bet a dozen tiny towns and coastal cities could stand up to it. It's like David and Goliath, except David has brothers!

Oh and uh... Goliath is like 100,000,000 times or more larger.

EDIT: I want to be sure of what he said the location of the storm was going.
 
Category 2 when it hit landfall, and it is missing New Orleans.

Not to say I told you so...

Though, it'll surely still impact other areas quite heavily.

I try to see a hurricane as a living organism. If it looks healthy, it's going to be more resilient if it is in tough conditions, and thrive off its surroundings when in good conditions.

Gustav did not look like it had its act together at all. There was no well defined eye, and it just didn't look like a very healthy hurricane - it was a big tropical mess. Thus, it didn't pick up strength like it could have, and it didn't maintain itself as well as it could have when going over land.
