I can imagine him being pissed off that his neighbours house was being robbed in broad daylight, and to him nothing appeared to really be being done about it, but yeh on the other hand, he was warmongering from the start.

I've been burgled a few times, had my car stolen a few times, etc., but I still wouldn't want them killed for it. This wasn't a life or death situation until this guy made it one.

It was Pasadena, so the burglers and the vigilante both were probably experiencing some kind of disorientation from the refinery fumes and stench...
