Sooo, who has participated in one of those things?

I went yesterday and today and helped build houses in places where people had been pushed out because of civil redevelopment. It was quite fun and excruciating at the same time.

I went with my friends, most of which who just went for the permanent record (I followed my freinds), so they sulked a lot. But still, we had fun hammering down the old-enough-to-have-seen-the-birth-of-christ houses so that we could build the new one.

We didn't really get to build much though, we mostly made the sccafolding and the wooden support for the roof and moved things around.

It would have been better if we didn't have to pay for the volunteer work. :/

Oh, and someone answer: why do engineers and people who lead these type of things have long hair and beards? It strikes me as odd. :p

For those of you confused: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habitat_for_humanity

obviously they're hippies because only hippies have long hair or beards ..hippies and jesus ..jesus was a hippie

anyways why do you have to pay? is it some rich kid program where fretting parents put their problem kids through before sending them off to military school or harvard? or is it some character building rich kid program designed to make well rounded business executives who wont rape little old ladies of their life's savings?

But the truck with the loudspeaker said that Jesus hated commies! (True story, there was ANTICOMMUNISM painted on it in large red letters. Saw it when trying to scrape the rust off the platerboard. Must be because its so rural.)

$30, for expenses (food, etc.). I'd say the latter, but it's actually the kids who want to participate so that they can go brag about it at the admittance comittee of frigging prestigous universities.

ya well that's the only reason why any teenager would volunteer for anything; it looks good on application/resume ..why would anyone waste their time doing labour if it didnt benefit them in some way? it's not about morality as most people are far too self-centered in that phase of their lives

Yeah.

Still fun.

There are a bunch of pretty normal people from my town who took part in this scheme somewhere in eastern europe. They paid for it via fundraising events in our area.

yes it's usually charity ..what he's saying is that that the program is charging money to participate in HfH. that isnt typical in my neck of the woods

It's kinda like "bring your own beer" charity, but more like "bring your own building materials". No point having more volunteers than work for them.
