Several attempts were made to access my Steam account this morning. It is currently being investigated as to who has been trying to access it, but in the meantime this is a friendly reminder.

Anyone found to be hacking into Steam accounts will be named, shamed, banned and reported to Valve...

If there's anything any of you would like to tell me before we do find out who's done it then feel free to send me a PM and we might be more lenient about getting your own account closed down and deleted.

Thanks.

Oh dear, why would they want to do that? Do you have access to unreleased games? Like KFRD? See i knew that game was trouble. 'Hacked' what does this mean? Just trying to guess your password or something along those lines.

I currently have access to the RDKF review/beta copy. It'd be pointless them trying to get in anyway because they can't download any of the unreleased games without the request being from my IP address anyway.

I have every single game ever released by Valve on there as well, as well as a pre-purchase of RDKF on there too.

There were loads of requests for a password change in my inbox so I imagine they've been trying to guess my password and maybe even access my e-mail account.

Someone must have a lot of time, trying to guess an unknown amount of charectors in the password.

btw, RDKF?

Rag Doll Kung Fu...

I may never find out who done it but if I do...

How dare you think that Munro did that! :frown:

Chris_D, don't worry if you have a good password :)

Don't know why any one would bother to be honest.. Bleh... I use a very complex password, so there's practically no chance of anyone guessing it. :p I recommend every one do the same. :)

Mine is over 10 characters contains letters and numbers in various places... impossible to guess but my main concern is they were probably trying to access my e-mail account as well which also has a strong password on it but it's still annoying.

When you use "Retrieve password" it sends an e-mail to your registered e-mail account sending you a verification number to put into Steam to let you change it.

Their IP address will be logged against my account so if that IP address is also logged next to the owner of that account then they're royally ****ed :)

I swear it's not me.

But anyway, they can't successfully get your account, so why bother trying to find out who it is?

That explains a lot.

Have you tried getting information from the MIME headers? With me, in Hotmail, they're always on, so I can easily see what IPs, what site, and much, much more the sender used. Might be useful if your account really gets "hacked".

So how do you know that the person trying to hack your account is part of halflife2.net?

He doesn't. He's warning us that it might happen to us and he says what things uncover that you might be being dictionaried.

The e-mail has originated from [email protected] and is an authentic Valve e-mail, but it's down to someone using Steam to try and retrieve my password that I'm getting them.

It was me.

****ed by who? the fbi? interpol? gabe newell?

If they were smart and skilled they'd just hide a key logger on your comp and get the pass that way.

Well, unless this person has access to your email account and the answer to your secret question, there is nothing much he can do.

The answer to the secret question is also very fussy. . . I had to fall back to it one time, and took me about 10 variations to get it correct.

Another thing to consider, it could be a prank - just one that no one finds funny at all.

Or someone has mistyped their username in wrongly and hit the Retreive lost password button, and has wondered why his email hasnt arrived, so has hammered the button a few times.
I don't know what you Steam username is, so I can not be the judge of that.

Just an update...

Naturally Valve aren't allowed to provide the person's IP address due to privacy reasons, and they can only do it by court order.

Additionally, it doesn't seem like the person doing it actually has a Steam account under the same IP address that the request was made from so nothing can be done.

Still, I do believe whoever it was is at least a visitor to the site, so if they do see this -- stop wasting your time :) You won't get my account.

Remains quiet as to not be a suspect within this investigation ....... DOH !

Ok Ok!
It was....
I shouldn't say but it was....
Chris_D a long time ago, when you were born...you were cloned....and he turned evil....well the hacker is your clone!

Or it's just some evil guy trying to get into your account to gain access to special things and leak them out.

Have to wonder what passwords he/she is trying.

"Iamtehchrisguy"
"password"
"god"
"bahigiveup"

:rolling:
