Half full, or half empty?

Why do people ask if the glass is half full, or half empty, and then base there opinion of your optimism or pessimism on that? It seems to me that if there is water in the glass, it is obviously half full.

In a state of rest (i.e. in the cupboard), the glass is entirely empty. So, if there is enough water in it to make it half full or half empty, doesn't this put it in a state of how much fullness of water there is? Like, it's always empty, and then suddenly BAM half full! Like... at rest we are asleep, and then the opposite of that is awake. Not... half-asleep.. or less asleep.. right?

So.... Half full, then?

You people are really scraping the bottom of the barrel for off-topic topics aren't you :)

I think the political situation in Uganda hasn't been discussed thoroughly enough.

Does anyone want to discuss the political situation in finland after our prime minister resigned because she got some classified documents about the iraq war when she was still running an election (before she was pm) and now had to resign and possible will face criminal charges?

The glass is neither half full nor half empty. Its always empty untill its full. Cant you do simple math?! :E

A glass isn't half full or half empty, it's just twice as large as it needs to be.

That's probably the best thing I've heard all day...

mhm.. Its almost as old as the perdicament (how ever u spell that?) it self. Anyways its both half full and half empty, FFS! Although if forced to choose I'd say half full... :)

The water is sitting at the middle level.

Technically, it's both half full and half empty. Both mean the same thing, so what's the point in making a distinction?

Thats what I said/ment

Sorry, didn't read yours. Skipped about half of them and just went to the Quick Reply box to put my opinion in.

EDIT: S'not my glass, anyway. My glass was much bigger. And it was full.

Anyone seen my glass?

Here's my take on it

A half full glass would mean the glass has been filled half way
A half empty would mean a full glass has had half of its contents emptied, making it half empty

Either way, they're the same thing, but, that's how I've always looked at it :)

Nope, that's impossible. It cant be two states at once, just one. Full or empty. Hasnt computers tought you ANYTHING?!
If you want to go REALLY technical, it empty all the time. If full is when it is running over the edge, then stops, its not full anymore! So you can never take a full glass, unless you put it in the sink and keep the water running all the time.
But then you cant drink from it, so that's not good is it? :)

It can be both at once if both are essentialy the same thing. Computers are finite state machines. A glass of liquid is not.

Empty denotes a total lack of content (barring air, in this case). If you even put a drop of water in there, it's not empty anymore. However, the single drop of water does not render it full, either. Full would, in it's strictest sense, indicate that you could not add any more liquid to the (completely level) glass. Ie: the glass plus the water makes a three-sided shape instead of a four sided one (which is to say, the internal geometry of the glass has been completely covered with water, in accordance with the laws of physics).

That's my take on it, anyway...

Half full/half empty is just a silly metaphor for Optimism/Pessimism. Your views on the state of a liquid in a glass really don't say anything about your outlook on life.

That is your beleif, not mine :)

Its simple logical math I tell you. Next you are going to tell me that 1+1 is always 2, pff...

The glass is half full if you fill it half way
Its half empty if you drink half of a full glass

Its called being a realist.

Do you know that computers can't even play Tetris?

1+1 can be since 1 to the end of numbers.

Who said the glass was empty? The glass is always full of air. It is your assumption that when people say the glass is hlaf-full they mean the amount of water and not the amount of air. Your anti-air prejudices are offensive.

If you just poured half a cup of water into the cup, it's half-full

If you just drank half a cup of water in the cup it's half-empty

The glass is half empty, and whatever's left is poison.

That's my outlook on the whole glass question.

I said this on the first page

So?

I can still comment wether you have said the same thing or not.

yeah, theres only one page here to all the cool people.

anyways, like shuzer first pointed out, it depends on whats happening to the glass. like dimitri said, it called being a realist.

optimism/pessimism my ass, both are bad in some way or another....too much pessimism and your, well, pessimistic, thats self-explanatory. too much optimism and you will be let down at every turn. a healthy dose of realism is what people need. a perfectly predicated balance between realism and pessimism, realism obviates any other -ism out there.

Rey...ah... liesmmm? Never heard of it.

Anyway, something to consider:
If you throw the glass in the ocean, is the glass full or empty? :)
Empty is by definition the same as the surrounding liquid/gas (in above water situation, air), so the glass cant be anything but empty...

lol, I didn't REALLY care that you guys posted the same thing I posted.. I was just cranky :)

and thanks for the retard award, it made my day! :)

Half empty = Your ment to look at the worse in things, more prone to depression

Half full = you have a good outlook on life and do well in alot of things

Or at least thats what people say, totall bullshit.

By the way, its half empty
