Im looking at the average unique users per month which is 2,434,734

And I remember before HL2 came out there was about 1,400,000 so do you think HL2 has sold over a million copies?

Also this is just something random, in the follow freeman chapter and the guy shouts "What's the password" and the other guy shouts "Password" Don't you think it would be hillarious if he shouted "gaben" instead :p

Dude, if I remember correctly, Steam versions alone number over 2 million copies.

Surely Valve would know. Although they may not tell you because they don't want to make Sierra cry.

It was said hl2 had 2 mill copys sold ONLY over steam. So think about the steam and retail sales. Nice for valve and for us. More valve gets the better for us. So happy valve made all that cash. They deserve it.

I believe there were 2 million steam pre-orders, and so with the christmas sales on top of that I'd say we're looking at a number CONSIDERABLY higher than 1 million,

no the 2 million figure game from some dodgey article and it said "2 million users have downloaded" simple based off the number of unique players, it doesn't say anything about sales. If I remember correctly it was about 1.8 million users when HL2 came out. But 1 million sales is possible.

That's it? That's pretty sad considering this game is one of the best games ever (IMO), and outshines a certain other sci-fi FPS sequel that did those figures in a single day. The first HL sold over 10 million units so I'm surprised at the turnout here. HL2 should at least be at three or four million by now.

Think about all the people who got silver (60) and gold (90) Plz all retail (55) and CE (80)

that 2 million number was misread. it didn't mean actual sales, it was who started preloading, or something like that.

the first half life never died down though, it slowly gained more players for the first couple of years. In time I'm sure HL2 will meet and possibly surpass HL1. :)

I bet it's already surpassed the 4 million mark world wide including both formats.. nevermind a piss-pot 1 million sales.

Bear in mind that Steam sales give Valve much more profit. It's not really the quantity of sales that counts in the long run so much as the value.

HL2 had a few hundred thousand pre-orders, which is quite something for a PC game (nothing compared to the pre-orders for console games however). So the 1 million mark isn't that far away after that. More people I know own HL2 legally than for any other game, even the biggest warez guys bought it.
Bol.com said it was their top selling game this christmas. And now with the demo and HL2DMl, even more are going to buy it.

Remember that the unique steam users are only showing those people who are playing online games, HL2 is not online.

I like how everyones pulling numbers out their ass.

Why dont we just wait for something more official.

Wait till a really good mod comes out for HL2, like what happend with HL with counterstrike and sales will sky rocket.

dont forget, that back when h1 came out, there werent as many thieves.

Nowadays, many people just get cracks of the games.

More people may be playing the game, but that doesnt mean more people have bought it.

(1 million) * ($50 American) = 50 million.

they don't collect on ever penny for hl2. Vivendi (stupid frenchies) and every other publisher takes a big %

That makes no sense. So if they sell 10 50$ boxes its better than 300 30$ boxes? 0_o

I wonder what Valve thinks about Half-Life 2. It would be great if Gabe or Cliffe would post here and tell us what they think about Half-Life 2. I mean, Half-Life 2 won't be able to receive another 50 GOTY due to stiff competition from console (more mainstream) market (HALO 2).
Do they still think of Half-Life 2 as a success? or would it be a failure?

I personally think of Half-Life 2 as a success, because I love playing the game, and that what's count for me.

p.s. : What do you guys think? Is it a success or a failure (in relation to Half-Life 1) ?
