Does Anyone know how to port a model from 3DsMax to WorldCraft??

My guess is that you will get more answers in models/skins, that's where the people capable of answering it hang out :)

there will be a exsternal program that u will have to download. Only a small program. It will be very basic. Proberly tell u to open your max file within this converter program and then it will auto port it to a .ham or .pre file or what ever the format is. No one knows hardly anythi9ng about mapping because valve are all hush hush.

Is it better for a complete noob to modelling to start with XSI or 3Dsmax?

Try both and use whichever you feel comfortable with. Both Discreet and SoftImage offer free lite versions of the software so take them both for a test drive and see what you think.

Do you mean, have a 3DsMax model in your worldcraft map? Or do you mean create a model of a whole map in 3Ds and import it into worldcraft? If it is the latter, it's not a very good idea. Read this: http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3896

Valve have said that HL2 will use a similar map format and BSP rendering. Use 3Ds Max for models and hammer/worldcraft for maps...

hl2 still use bsp tech, just an advanced one. Your mapping is still done in notpad or hammer. Its impossible to make a map in 3dsmax and not import it into hammer before playing. Also u can't import into notpad so :p.

well XSI will be shipped with HL2 for free so i would recomend XSI if you don't have the $3000+ for the 3dsMAX.

!!MAX vs XSI!!

Well, alot can be said for both 3dsmax and XSI.
Ive used both, started with 3dsmax and moved over to XSI.
But I still find myself falling back to 3dsmax for alot of stuff.

#1 reason for Valve switching to XSI = Animation and especially their facial animation controls.

Not for any real Modeling reason, its for animation reasons.

So, if your making a Static-mesh for use within a MAP , then most people will find 3dsmax to be sufficient, and 3dsMAX is definately the more user/dummy-friendly of the two.

but if your looking for character modeling/animation etc.. and your just starting off, You would likely benefit from tackling XSI and working through the learning curve there..

Alot of people who use 3dsmax find it difficult to switch to programs like XSI and Maya, because the interface and overall workflow is quite different then what max users are used to.

but its your call,
You will see some excellent work for HL2 coming from MAX, XSI, Maya and Lightwave..
So pick your fav.
But in my 8 years of 3d work, 3dsmax has taken me from beginner hobbiest... to professional artist.
