From 'raising the bar' "Valves portfolio accounts for 12 million retail units sold worldwide" Now this must be a number just before half life 2 was released.

From the recent EA announcments.

"This portfolio of titles accounts for over 18 million retail units sold worldwide"

Very nice number, what do you guys think.

Probably mostly Hl2, but some of that is people buying Hl1/CS/CZ

I think Valve is doing quite well for sales, with how man they sold through Steam :)

And it's not over yet! HL1 sold more copies the following years than upon its release.

i don't think those numbers account for HL2 simply because the book was released just weeks after the game was released.
those numbers probably are related to the first HL/CS/DOD/TFC/CZ

don't think its possible to add HL2 numbers because then the book would come out a bit later.. thats my thinking anyway.

Well yeah, what im saying is.

12 million orginal half life copies sold. + 6 million half life 2 copies sold = 18 million total.

It's a possibility that they sold a million HL1 copies, but I doubt it.

That would be compensated by people who would register HL2 on their existing account, like me.

Now add all those players who use an illegal version of the game! Numbers would be impressive!

Anyone have the figures at all? Hell, Microsoft couldn't wait to release the sales figures for Halo 2... why is Valve so "hush hush"?

WHO FRICKIN' CARES HOW MANY COPIES A GAME SELLS!?!

You lot remind me of all those morons who weep on the IMDb movie boards because they think that if their favourite movie does not score top ratings at the box office then everyone will think it is crap.

SO WHAT? Box Office Receipts or Game Sales do not determine a game's quality or popularity!

The sooner all of you realise this the better!

Steam sales are unpublished. But isn't there a published number of steam subscribers? Multiply that by the bronze HL2 version price to get a rough estimate maybe?

And why not care about how many copies a game sells? It's interesting stuff, and a boggling amount of money. How many points did your favorite sports team score the other day? Why do you care - it matters even less than this does, you fool.

Think of it like this:
Publisher often takes most of the money..developers make like 6 to 7 bucks.
So lets say halo 2 sold 10 millon.
10million x 6.5 = 65 million for bungie.
lets go...lets say HL2 only sold 2 million for steam..
They make about $35 off of steam per copy.
that would be $70 MILLION for steam. I would think far more than 2 million were sold from steam.
Then add 70 million plus (6 million x 6.50) = 30 million.

As you can see even if HL2 sold only 2 million on steam, they would make more money than if Bungie sold 10 million retail.
Amazing huh?

If I worked at valve I'd hook one of those LED scrolling display bars up to the steam servers and mount it in the offices, showing the total dollar amount generated by steam sales. Like the national debt counter, only infinitely more awesome.

Because it's just interesting to know. If they released numbers that said that HL2 sold 100,000 copies I wouldn't stop playing or think less of the game.

I doubt it would be that much. Even if you take it as the top figure of 6 million sales over all, 2 million would mean that Steam sales would reach a whole third of that. It seems unlikely to me that as many as 1 in 3 bought it through Steam. Maybe in the course of time it will reach that many.

OK, I shouldn't get so emotional (really must calm down) but it sounds to me like you're all a bunch of accountants, obsessed with statistics and profits, and I just know how dull that sounds, believe me - I've worked for an accountant.

At least with your favourite sports team you get a sense of thrill about watching the game and wondering what the final score will be. That's when it's live. Watching repeats is dull though, that's true.

Bored, I've already been banned once, but why should I be banned for stating my opinion, even if it was a bit emotional?

That's pretty much it. Stats can be fun.

why are people counting HL2 sales into the figures released in the "Raising The Bar" book?
isn't it safe to say that by the time anyone got hold of HL2 sales figures, this book was already on its way to the publisher or even being printed? therefore those figures mainly just account for the first HL game and others such as CS, DOD, TFC and CZ...

hmm...am i missing something here? do u people know something i don't?? please inform me.

raising the bar said 12 million back in nov. ea said 18 million last week. that means 6 million difference. read the first post, it really isnt that complicated.

The only thing I would think of if I saw HL2 sold only 100K copies, would be "Stupid Doom3/Halo fanboys...their loss" heh..but we all know HL2 sold RATHER WELL. I got at least 5 other people to by the game in the first week since I talked about it non-stop.

I doubt I'm the only one to do that.

re-read my post first.
i read that comment about Raising The Bar book and i thought i made it clear when i said i thought those numbers were for the first HL and the mods.

as far as EA's numbers go.. im not disputing that.

i think its pretty obvious that raising the bar didnt have #'s for hl2 sales.

how stupid can you possibly be?

Raising the bar (before HL2) : Valve's total sales = 12 million

EA (After HL2) : Valve's total sales = 18 million

18 million total sales (with HL2 and previous games)
-12 million sales ( only previous games)
___________________________________________
= 6 million sales (HL2 only)
