Hi everyone, I am going to reformat my HD, and I dont want to download the 2 or 3 gigs of preloads from Hl2 all over again, and I dont have a dvd burner, and no, I cant buy one, so is there a way to backup all the hl2 gfc's on regular cd's??? Is there a program that can split the gfc's to make them fit on cd's? Thanks for your help.

I think you can do it with WinRar or WinZip somehow. I'm no expert though.

make a partician on your harddrive with just the preload files on, then format only the other partician. if you dont already know how to do this, its probably not best to try.

Yeah, im not that good with software on pc's, just hardware, but the winrar idea sounds interesting, anyone know how?

basicly, download winrar ( http://www.rarlab.com/ ) and follow the help instructions to rar one of the preload files. if it compresses it from 1gig to about 600meg, you'll be able to put them on cd. if not you'll have to bite the bullet and re-preload after you format :(

If you have another computer in the house just set up a network and temporarily transfer the files to the other PC and then back when your done formatting

Using winrar u can split them up, then u burn them to cds, format pc, sticks disks in, copy them back to same directory and click .part1 it'l automatically do the other parts :)

If it were me, I would take all the preload files and put them in one rar. let's say it's 2.8gb compressed. Now that won't fit on a cd, so you have to use one of winrar's nicer functions which is splitting large rar's into smaller files, and you can say what size or number of files. so 2800MB/700MB = 4 cd's. burn the hl2.rar to one cd, hl2.r00 to the next hl2.r01... etc.

By the way, i just started said compression, and unless you're running a Cray T3 Supercomputer (or equivilent (quad-opteron)), you may want to do this overnight. 1hr 8min remaining with my XP2800+ (duron 2500+)

Chriso20, your sig contains a spelling error, avator is spelled avatar.
An embodiment, as of a quality or concept; an archetype: the very avatar of cunning.

Just did the compression, ends up around 1.65GB
so 3 cd's. That's a pretty high ratio, started around 3.3g.

Anyway, good luck with your format!
