Vivendi Universal Games Australia Pty Ltd today announced that over 20,000 copies of Half-Life 2 were bought in Australia in the first five days since its launch on November 17th.

The sales of Half Life 2 create a new record for the most PC games to be sold in a games' first week at retail, and surpass the previous record by 50 percent.

I'm not sure why they haven't announced European/U.S sales results, probably not as flattering. :D

Well i found that mildly interesting.

Theres no way of knowing. Valve hasnt released the sales figures of the steam purchases, so no way of knowing how well its done. Youd have to be crazy to think it has done anything close to unflattering.

And believe me, with the ongoing lawsuit with VU, there is no way in hell Valve is going to release Steam sales information as you could be sure VU would use that in their case.

VU will get that info eventually as they will issue a subpoena for it as part of their discovery process for the trial but there's no need for Valve to make it easier for 'em :)

retail figures are likely to be comparitively better in australia 'cos most broadband suppliers here still have monthly download limits.... hence less ppl wanting to use up their monthly allowance on a hl2 preload when they could just get it on a CD from Harvey Norman.

as a side note: did u notice Telstra introduced their "unlimited" broadband plans at around the same time WON was deactivated and Steam became compulsory? i think catering for CS players had a lot to do with it.

Wowza, thats alot.

2 million australian in the first five days for a video game is alot for a PC game.

Am I blind or does that say 20,000 and not 2 million?

it's less than A$2,000,000 cos many retailers are selling hl2 standard for less than A$80, some places even less than A$70

edit: fyi new release games in au = A$100 normally

k-mart, target and meyer are selling it for 68 bucks i think.

Just goes to show that making a quality game is still the ultimate way of getting people to legally buy a game. You could expect HL2 to break retail records even if there was no copy protection whatsoever on it.

The most common price for new games is actually $90, not $100. HL2 falls into this category.

I remember paying $AU120 for Street Fighter 2 on SNES when it first came out. Thats about the most expensive RRP ive seen for a videogame

In 'Brisbane' (At all the major stores etc) the default price is always $100, or more.

Hah, you want something amusing? Apparently the sales for the "ligitimate" copy of HL2 in Moscow and surrounding area have exeded that of most European countries.

I am sure they made less money though since a copy here is around 22-26$.
