Hey guys i got a question here.maby its been answered already but i dont know since i havent been here in months. In half life when you shoot the wall or a piece of wood, vent there is always a black spot where the bullet hole is.Now that half-life 2 is going to have destructable wood and what not, are the bullet holes in half life 2 going to be see through?like if you shoot a crate will you be able to see through the hole and into the crate? i always thought that every fps needed this because you could like shoot or break a small hole in the wall then go up to it and scan the area.Like looking through a key hole kinda. And one more thing if they did or are going to put that in are they gonna implement lighting effects in it? like when looking at the side of a window from in a room in hl2. Thanks alot guys i appreciate it!!!!

That would be cool, but I don't think Valve has said anything on that topic..

They already said the environments aren't fully destructable, and that would be the same thing. If a bullet puts a hole through something, then you could just shoot it to pieces.

I'm sure it will just be decals.

Well, I think that EVERYTHING should be destructable

You go build me a super computer so I may process the city being destroyed.

I thought i heard somewhere pretty much everthing can be destroyed! just most things are there to help u through the level but isnt necisary, so u can take out urz boom stick and blast it to pieces, go all duke nukem on there azzez, time to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and im allllllll outa gum! <(*.*)>

techniqly every thing could be destructable. but the game designers obveously wouldnt do that. frame rate accordingly.

im not to sure about the bullet hole thing i kinda doubt it but hey things may have changed....

from the things I've seen when wood gets shot in game it splinters in half, not specific holes. This would be a cool feature but its not entirely likely to happen. especially with a crate since you woudln't have anything to look at on the inside. If this were the case then you should be able to see through bullet holes in cars, because (unlike what you might see in movies (cough matrix reloaded) bullets DO go through the sheet metal used for cars.

good point there......And for once, i DON'T think that it is possible to mod this in, because didn't VALVe say that bullets weren't 3d models?????? :dozey:

If you could destroy every single wall, than this game would be huge.
EDIT: I mean more huge than it already is.

Um, you could put that in regardless of whether or not the bullets were physically modeled.
The main problem is that destroying things = more polies on the screen = slow.

Umm, wake up?

In the E3 '03 tech demo video, it showed the player shooting planks of wood which broke rather than showing holes. Perhaps this was because they were precariously balanced and not particularly substantial, but I'd take it as a fairly good indicator that you would be able to riddle wooden things with bullet holes.

There was something like this is a Far Cry level. Hella fun. :naughty:

i don't knwo anything about moddig, but is it possible instead of making a real mod, changing something to hl2???? Like shooting holes with bullets!!!!!!!!1 :naughty:

Look in the Bugbait Bink's.
When the turrets shoot you.
On each side of the door.
It's decals.

Also, the Green windows get cracks when shot - don't break completely. Good effect as that should also happen in real life - no windows totally break apart from a couple of bullets.

I think those windows where bullet proof, after all that is the prison level isn't it.

Anyway, i agree, decals are drawn not holes.

You guys are seriously overestimating Source. Physical bullet holes are simply not possible because it means altering the brush geometry.

And every building is not made destructable not only for framerate issues, but it's a helluva lot of work too. Every piece of debris has to be modeled individually, Source can't create them on the fly.

Maybe this hole thing is possible with alpha maps, but I doubt that because that would make the decal invisible, not the brush it's painted on.

I guess what a mod could do is dynamically place a camera on the exit side of a bullet hole and place a screen on the entry side of the hole, but is it really worth it???

Oh yeah, silly me. They were probably bullet proof.

The last time they talked about it, the limitation was still one camera per 'area' so you would only be able to make one hole.

:(10charlimit

well what they could do is limit the bullet holes to what your system could handle

The answer to your bullet penetration and cs physics...

Subject: Bullets\Penetration\Physics question.

1. Will mod makers be able to make bullets penetrate wood and not break? In other words picture a wooden board, if I wanted to mod it so you shoot the board and you can see through the board where the bullets went through, sort of the way STALKER does it. Is this possible?
*** While this is possible with code changes, I'd have to ask what gameplay this helps. There are many things we could do in source that we simply don't because it has little effect on the gameplay. Do you have something in mind that would be cool if you could do this?

2. I heard the physics have been exaggerated in CS: S. Is this going to be fixed? Is this an issue in hl2 as well?
*** In CS:Source we have a multiplayer physics system in place that while a bit unrealistic, provides us with the effect that we want without overburdening the network traffic and overall performance.

3. Have you confirmed wheter or not we will be able to basically refer to my first question, except picture sun or light on the other side, would we be able to make the light peer through dynamically? In a mod of course.
*** See my answer to #1 above.

Very cool, but is it really necessary to post this here since you've already posted it in the Info From Valve thread?

Actually i posted it here first, and this is to save someone else the trouble of making a discussion of it.

ATTN guinny - HL2 info thread

I'm afraid stalker does not let you see through the bullet holes, they are just the same as HL and HL2 wherein a decal is used to show where the bullet passed through.

Yet another thread merged, I wish people would look around before starting a new topic.

Well then HL2 has even more features. I can't WAIT to see what modders find/come up with.

lol wow noone has anything to say now...

Just another ignorant comment. Look, you could make *everything* breakable, it's just a simple tag you put on the object while you're creating it in whatever mapeditor you're using. HOWEVER, it would take a massivly-overkill-computer to process it. It is already possible within the engine, without and bigger filesize, fool.

Forgot about that. It was in the ship, where if you shot the wall, streams of 'light' would pour through where the bullet hit. Obviously it wasn't real light, just decals that looked like a beam of light. Still very well done though.

If everything was destructable, we could pick up buildings and throw them at striders :D

That would be cool...but an easier way out of things...

Just imagine the lag you'd get with today's computers when going full auto... it would be really nice though.

Ahh, i was looking for my thread, it must have been posted 30 secs before this happened, sorry mods :}

Also, if everything was destructible, it would also mean that the gameplay would have to be completely reworked. Why? What if you knock down a building that has the shiny artifact you have been looking for? or you shoot a Strider and he topples over the building that the next map is supposed to be set in? blah blah etc. you have to change the whole game to accomodate this feauture. That, and too many polygons onscreen :D
