Feel free to use a search engine. It's short for canonical.

Yeah it's scripted to open if he dies from a HEADCRAB at that point in the game, and he didn't. It is just a well put together joke.

That didn't really help, i looked it up on google and couldn't find an exact answer. Isn't anyone nice enough to just tell me what it is?You see, instead of wasting your time with that "let me google that for you" thing you could have just made a simple, straight-forward answer to my question.

It's more likely a scripted fail safe to ensure the player can proceed regardless of whether the scientist is alive to fulfill his role or not.

To make this quick, canon is basically accurate and non-canon is inaccurate.

Essentially, something that is canon is something that happened, without a doubt, in the official timeline of a fictional universe. On the other hand, something that is non-canon is something that did not happen in the one true timeline of a fictional universe.

For example, I can say something like "Gordon Freeman finds a crowbar in the Sector C test labs of Black Mesa," and that's canon because it happens, without a doubt, in the official sequence of events that occur in the first Half-Life game.

On the other hand, I can say something like "Gordon Freeman met Chell shortly after turning Nihilanth into a solid ice-cream statue with the Portal Gun," but that's non-canon because there's no official authority (like a Valve writer or a Valve game) to back it up.

Examples of non-canon don't have to be so ridiculous, though, since it's common for people to argue about whether certain events "really" happened or not in the official Half-Life timeline, which can get particularly confusing because of how many mysterious and as-yet-unexplained things happen in the Half-Life games. Some people even argue that the entire Half-Life 2 game series (HL2, Ep1, Ep2) didn't happen at all, since none of it can happen if the player chooses not to walk into the portal at the end of the first Half-Life game.
