how to make an hl2 dedicated server

1st. Aquire the dedicated server files

download here:
http://up1.fastuploads.com/sourceds.rar (these are files obtained by using the hldsupdatetool made by valve)

or use the HLDSUpdateTool which can be found somewhere on steampowered.com

2. copy your /hl2/ folder to sourceds/hl2 (make sure all the .gcf files have been extracted into it, and make sure it's not the main half-life 2 folder but the /hl2/ folder)

3. make a shortcut with a commandline that looks like this

C:\sourceds\srcds.exe -game hl2 -maxplayers 128 +map hl2deathmatch -console


4. run the shortcut and you have a hl2 dedicated server!

there was no server binary compiled for linux... so you'll probably have to run it through WINE

its just launching sourceds and loading the hl2 dlls.
same as with old hlds and all mods.

Nobody has done it before. It's amazing that someone has finally managed to run a HL2 dedicated server and the person who figured it out should be crowned god.

For doing something someone hadn't done with HL2. For doing something no one else had done before.

Was it particularly hard? No. Did we know about it before this? Did you? Some may have - but most didn't. If you knew - you weren't sharing.

People are happy about that MP in Half Life is closer than people thought. For whatever reason, you're not one of them.
