Does anyone possibly know whether there will be a HL2 demo? I plan to buy the legal copy of HL2 when it is finally released, but I would be quite pissed if it ran badly on my machine. Therefore I would like to check it out on a demo. So, anyone got a clue? :dozey:

Not sure... If there will be a demo I think it'll be released after the initial release of Half-Life 2, unlike other games as Farcry and a ton of others.

They're not planning one it according to their latest response regarding this subject.

And I wouldn't even want one, it would ruin the feeling of playing the engine for the first time.

Most likely there will not be a demo be4 the release maybe after though

Heh, the Beta in a way is a",demo". For it doesn't includ all the weapons(as far as I know), and it makes you want more.

Ruin the feeling of playing the engine for the first time? Eh? How could that be a factor? If it's just for the sake of the engine, then it wouldn't matter if it was the full game or a demo. If they released a demo, it should be something a la Uplink.

Considering the stolen build has 20+ weapons, I can't imagine there being more.. oh well, most of them had no models

Anyhow, didn't VALVe say way back that a HL2 demo would be released after the game came out?

It would be smart of Valve not to release a demo until after the game is released. In the past, demos have left a bad tatse in peoples mouths and altered their choices of purchasing the game. A lot of people have stopped hyping about painkiller because of the demo, and the same thing is happeneing to FarCry.

If they can't get the benchmark right, then do you think that a quickly made demo will be any good?

Ahh.. sry i didnt read it right.... There will be, but Gabe said it would be after the game itself was shipped, or at least so I belive he said.

Agreed. It should be a level (in the demo) that's not included in the whole version IMO.

The Half-Life Uplink demo was very fun, but pretty short though.

uhm.. I think the FC demo did more good than harm, hell, it has over 500,000 DLs at gamershell..

Anyhow, I do agree on the PK thing -- however, I didn't care for PK until I played the demo.. I may be purchasing it, but, I have no money.. :(

On the other hand, look at what the demo of UT2004 is going to do for sales when the full game comes out. People are going crazy about it! They've played it for consecutive weeks on The Screen Savers LAN Party on TechTV. Not to mention that it looks like its going to be an absolutely amazing game. I can't wait to buy it.

Well, I didn't play the beta. I think copying a game instead of buying it legally is one thing, but stealing the source code and making it available for everone is another (and it SUCKS). Therefore I decided I won't play the leaked beta.

Demos are great when they're done right. But a wrong move and that's it for the game sales.

The demos that have been released (FarCry, Painkiller, UT2004, etc.) have all made me more interested in them. From the observations of people in this forum though, they're not happy with them anymore.

The demo for the original HL was completely separate from the actual game (the level included that is). They'll probably do something similar but it will probably be released slightly *after* the official release.

There will be no demo.

Valve have spoken about releasing a benchmark before the game is released so everyone will know how it will run. Regardless of this, the fact that the minimum spec for the game is ridiculously low and the hardware survey Valve have just completed shows that about 70% of people are on low end machines then you won't have much to worry about.
