Half-Life 2 DVD edition

I just found out that the only standard Half-Life 2 DVD edition will only be released in the UK. I don't want to mess around with 6 cds, nor do I want to buy the $80 collectors edition of the game in order to get a copy on dvd. If I go online a buy the game from a UK retailer for 27 pounds or so (I think that's about the same as we would pay for the standard edition of the game here in the US), will I encounter any problems?

Or, will there be a US DVD release some reasonable amount of time after the initial release?

Well you will probably have to pay import tax, other than that I cant see why you'd have a problem. Also if you want it for around the 30 pound mark pre order it soon because prices will bounce back up to 35-40 once its released.

so the American release (the regular retail box) will have 6 CDs right? I can't read DVDs on my drive so I hope there is definately a CD package for me :(.

There are dozens of websites you could buy the UK version from that will never rise above £29.99.

If anyone is paying £35-40 for the game from anywhere they are a total tool.

I dont know any UK retailers which deliver outside europe. Also the time you save by installing from a DVD instead of 6 CDs (what, 5 minutes?). Will be offset by the shipping costs and delay of several days while you wait for it to arrive (UK release will be the 19th, and then shipping time).

Is it really hard to come by DVD drives these days? If not then it is a worthy investment for about $40 (I'm only guessing, its £30 for one over in the UK)

not to mention the UK game will be set for region 2 drives right? or is that only for movies?

Only for movies. PC DVD drives tend not to be region specific.

Thanks... I've ordered games from the UK before and it IS a huge hassle. I try to support dvd-editions of games whenever they come out.. but I think perhaps I'll just get it off steam-at least that way valve gets more of my money...

Thanks for the info though...

i know finland and most of europe are doing dvd's and in previous titles usually europe gets dvds right away since we're hitech like that :p

but if u just buy it on steam no cds whatsoever...

It seems most if not all european publishers have moved completely on to a single DVD in a thin DVD case for all PC games now instead of CD's and a box like in N. America. I think this was primarily done for shipping, storage, and manufacturing reasons, but who knows. As for ordering from the UK, remember there might be more delays and charges than you'd like :D
