Anyone else feel like the ending is crap.
Compared to the rest of the games excellance (in all fields) the ending just doesn't do it justice.
Seems to me they must of rushed it to hit a deadline maybe????

everyone who complains about the ending is a moron remember the ending for hl1? pretty much the same thing and when u bought the game most people knew there was going to be a hl3 or played the original and knew what to expect. how lame would it have been to tie up all the loose ends in the 2nd game? that would leave one retarded 3rd game. and for those who played the first u should appreciate the ending it really makes u feel like gordon would really feel he knows nothing just like u thats what its supposed to be so can it you stupid douches....damn i hate stupid people

I think it's legitimate to claim that the final "fight" was anticlimatic. There was nothing clever or difficult about destroying the Dark Energy Reactor. Sure, it's nice for there to be no Boss, but that doesn't stop the interactive element of the end being a suprisingly run-off the mill event.

However, I pity the foo' who don't respect the G-Man's speech at the end. We all saw it coming a mile off, and it was just so well composed and set that i'd not hear anything against it. What the final chapter of HL2 boils down to is a bit of anticlimatic, mundane action, sandwiched inbetween two amazing story sequences which tell you just enough about the wider picture, whilst being immense fun to watch over and over again.

Sure was a 'lorra' threads on this....

On a side note, cool!

"... time dr. Freeman? Is it really that... time again? It seems as if you only just arrived. You've done a great deal in a small timespan, you've done so well in fact that I've received some interesting offers for your services. Ordinarily I would contemplate them, but these are extraordinary hmm? Rather than offering you the illusion of free choice, I will take the liberty of choosing for you, if and when your time comes around again. I do apologize for what must seem to you an arbitrary imposition, dr. Freeman, I trust it will all make sense to you in the course of... well I'm really not at liberty to say... In the meantime, this is where I get off..."

The ending could have been better, but I still thought it was cool.

That was my sig back in the year 2004 :) good times.

ummm... PvtRyan? There's a little thing called the SPOILER button. I've already beaten the game many times, but I'm sure there're others on this forum who haven't.

The problem isn't that it didn't tie up the loose ends; more that it was so damned anticlimatic.

Personally, I loved the ending. Had a very 2001 vibe to it (2001: A Space Odyessy being one of my all-time favorite films).

I loved the ending. A direct parallel to the HL1 ending, setting it right up for HL3 and there wasn't a scene with a gigantic alien boss, defeating a common FPS cliche.

Then why the hell is such a person reading a thread about the f*cking ending? :|

And Kage, why is that by definition a bad thing? It's not supposed to be a conclusion to anything, it's supposed to cut the game off at a sudden. There's nothing wrong with that by definition. Not your taste, fine, but don't call it a bad ending.
But what would have been a good ending then?

Something with closure, and not just story-wise. I've made this example before, but it illustrates my point well; it's like cutting out the end bit of Helm's Deep, and labelling that point as the end of Two Towers. It just doesn't work, especially in a video game, in which the player is effectively a part of what's going on rather than just acting as an observer. Yes, I understand why it ends the way it does in terms of the plot, and there's nothing wrong with that. But there's just no emotional payoff. People are just left there thinking "...that's it?!"

Why the hell do some people want closure on a storyline that is still not fully told?

Again, this isn't about the story, it's about giving the game some sort of emotional climax. The entire last sequence is just a huge build-up to something that never shows itself.

I liked the ending. Fifty soldiers, a strider and two gunships was better than any single boss.

I also liked the decision that, instead of making the ending the 'ultimate challenge' it instead had Gordon turn into Gravgun Jesus and mercilessly p'zone everyone.

That's sort of the genius of it. You are the boss of HL2. :P

I agree, except that I would have liked to see a boss. It really needed some kind of threat besides the soldiers and gunships we've fought a hundred times before. Nihilith really delivered at the end of HL1.. that whole thing was really mind blowing. No such revelation of dark forces at the end of HL2.

I really liked the way the game ended. Offcourse, I wasn't happy it was all over but I thought they did a good job. It ended on a real cliff hanger - you've no idea whats coming next, You don't know if Alyx survives or anyone else for that matter. I wonder how HL3 will start & end?

Wow that's a good way to look at it!

I agree with this man. Everyone, listen to him.

Wake up Mr. Freeman, wake up and smell the ashes.

Worst ending ever and completely opposite of HL1 ending.

I must admit I was expecting it but as you say it's a real cliche in FPS's. I'm glad Valve didn't have one in there for this reason. I expect a huge boss fight in HL3 though. cliche or not, There has got to be some kind of climatic mega fight that concludes the story & sets the G-man off on one of his speaches. In this moment all will be revealed! It's going to be awesome ............. I hope.

I don't even see how you can say that. You were at the top of the citadel, with possibly the coolest sight I have ever seen in a video game (the huge portal over the sunset sky), you were grabbing energy balls and taking down gunships in one hit, and finally you destroy Breen's capsule, dodging countless insults. Then there is a huge explosion, the likes of which have never been seen in a video game.

This entire sequence was the emotional payoff of the game. It was a climax in every sense of the word. You came, you saw, you conquered.

The problem with the ending is this: not what happened...it was ok. I didn't mind the whole G-man ending...but through the whole of the game...there where 2 clear objectives...reach the Lab, and meet up with Eli Vance. Then, midway, you get teleported...but stay missing for the week. That to me, was a focus change...then it was rescue Eli. Well, I never got the chance to rescue Eli...didn't he get teleported somewhere with that chick..what was her name?
So that leaves us at this: You get the "bad man", but not end the occupation...you destroy the teleporter for them...but doesn't Dr Kliener still have one? Anyway, you get whisked away by the G-man, leaving Alyx at the top of the Citadel. Obviously, in my mind, DOG comes to her rescue in some way, because of the expansion/game that supposedly has you playing Alyx and DOG. So that's all fair...

But what happened to Eli Vance? Why where you there then? Working for the "bad guys", and ending Dr Breen's "administraion"? Because the aliens have us doing the research on the teleportation devices? And because of Dr. Breen, and his superiority complex, the research could not continue?...so you eliminated him? But for which side? Is there even "a side"?

So then it begins.... GIVE ME HALF-LIFE 3!! YOU OWE ME VALVE!!

LoL.

It sent me into an unbelievable submissive state. I think for a game to actually be able to do that is amazing.

okay, tell me something.
after it was known before HL2's release that there would be a HL3.. what were u expecting?
obviously it was going to be a cliff hanger ending...and to think all ur questions would be answered is just a tad naive(sp?)

i thought the ending was decent, all things considered.

But it could have been a kick ass cliffhanger ending with an actual ending. Not all cliffhanger endings have to be abrupt like that. I wanted some resolution. IMO that G-Man ending really did dissapoint.

A few questions, if you don't mind.

1) Why did you register to say something that has been said over and over?

2) Why didn't you like the biozeminades?

3) Why did you obsessive amounts of sniper emoticons in your post? Was it nessacary? You could of given those emoticons to the 3rd world countries and they could of eaten it... What a waste.

/me points out Helm's Deep yet again

Imagine having the whole thing up to the bit when Gandalf is coming down the cliffside with the rohirrim. Helm's Deep is a fantastic ending to a fantastic movie, but you just ruin it entirely if you simply cut off the very end. I already said that everyithng leading up to the ending was brilliant, but if you don't have any sort of sufficient conclusions to these events, it's gonna feel anticlimatic. Like I said, the whole sequence just keeps building up and up to something that never shows itself.

Awsome ending I wouldn't change it. Its leaving me in suspense for whatever else follows

If people who have not beaten the game come into a thread called Half Life 2 ENDING! and are shocked to find spoilers, Im not going to feel very sympathetic.
