I liked the ending, it was far better than the typical big boss end.Endlessly running round emptying all your ammo into the big boss only to get wiped out time and time again.
The ending to HL2 left the way open to HL3 and expansion packs.
the only thing I didn't like about the ending was that it was the end of a superb game.

I loved the ending!

But it could have been a kick ass cliffhanger ending with an actual ending. Not all cliffhanger endings have to be abrupt like that. I wanted some resolution. IMO that G-Man ending really did dissapoint.

Er, what else is a cliffhangar but an abrupt ending and the expectation of more to come?

@ cadaveca: I think Alyx is about to become Ms. Krispy. I seriously doubt that DOG is about to save her. She's a nanosecond from obliteration when the G-Man does his thing with time.

The whole Dark Energy episode was the ending - not just the apocalyptic final 20 seconds.

The ending has done exactly what valve has intended. Left me wanting more.

Too me, i count the entire citadel sequence as the finale/ending. The entire game was a build up to it, you step off the train, the word "citadel" is mentioned by breen, you take your first steps out into the plaza and what is standing straight ahead of you, dominating the skyline...the citadel.

Its mentioned throughout the game and you know your going to end up there, you just know it, the whole game is the build up and evidently it does show itself.

For me it began the moment i dropped down into the severed tunnel, glanced at the charred body and looked up at the citadel. This was the ending. The entire sequence is climatic as your ushered through the citadel in the pod then dropped into the weapons confiscation zone. Your given your super grav gun and you go marching through the citadel tossing combine soldiers left and right...

The sequence in breens office is merley a pause, and, from the moment you saw this place at the teleporter incident you knew you were going to come here and face off against Breen.

The reactor sequence itself is climatic, despite how easy it was, because its a race against time, you know you have to stop him and when you finally reach the top of the citadel your like...this is it.

And then theres the unexpected explosion freeze, you must have been expecting gman to show up somewhere along the line, but not as abrupt as this...

I dont see where the missing conclusion bit comes in, sure you dont know exactly what happened but you know you have just achieveed something major.

Well thats how i felt anyway.

That's a great way to put it - you have indeed done something major - you've blown up the freaking citadel! Is that not a conclusion?

That's not the problem. Like I said, it's like cutting out the climax of the final battle in a film. It's like pausing a movie; it brings you completely out of the moment and ruins it. The difference here is that the game ends at this point, whereas a paused movie can be resumed instantly. Hell, I reckon the Gman bit could have been done in a way that wasn't antilcimatic. But no, the developers just decided to put the event on pause. "Better luck next time!"

This ending serves a great purpose for those like myself. Why answer questions? Why not leave them open so we can predict and guess and hypothosize what might be of Half-Life 3? If the ending was too direct, that would make HL3 a 'shitty game'.
