Half-Life 2 Engine to complicated for major mods

They dont need to waste time on facial animation that much though in MP.

Like in day of defeat a simple open mouth would do for voice calls, complex fear emotions on some teammate you cant even see are a waste of space and CPU cycles.

Of course we wont know for a while, because the dumbass dod team couldnt throw together a version to release with HL2.

Gave said they use a cheaper algortihm for facial movements in multiplayer

this was way before CS:S

hello,
I can't believe some people are actually thinking modding will die? first ask yourself, ahve you ever been in teh modding community yourself? there are so many people that just thrive to work on a stong mod that will be created and will work hard to do it. I don't think that it'll take 2 years, because once the team Im workin on with right gets the SDK we're starting then, well a little break while playing HL2 ;) heh, but you can't say it'll be that long. I find a community is what most mods lack and that's why they die, they have no support and feel that the mod won't survive so they drop it... there are some mods though that have the craziest ideas yet they are easily accomplished and very enjoyble. I say modding will go on for years from now, also visit http://www.shadow-phoenix.com we are having our huge update soon hupefully... heh before HL2 release ;)

Yea i just think it sucks we're gonna hafta wait around 2 years before we see any really big mods come out of the woodwork

:(
I think this is a pretty bad estimate. I can't speak for other mods, but Dystopia is planned to release much, much sooner than 2 years.. I won't do anything silly like give out an inaccurate release date, but suffice to say I've left my job and am working on our mod full time now :)

Teddy but what about the bills! Won't somebody please think of the childr.... bills!?!?!

It's alright, Fuzzy pays my internet bills, and the Government is paying my rent. Now i've got all the time in the world to make dystopia exactly the way i want it!

With regards to modding - I had the chance to have a beer with Flayra (Natural Selection modder) when he was visiting in Vancouver - he said that NS would be relatively easy to direct-port to the source engine, which is to say, getting it to run under source without adding any additional features.

To take advantage of all of the additional goodies, it's a matter of how fancy you want to make it, and what you're trying to do. I imagine that a complete rewrite to use source would be labour-intensive, so I'd imagine that the first thing modders will do are direct-ports

Then when they get time, the new mod releases will be re-written where necessary to get the most out of the new engine.

N.
