I heard about the Half Life 2 leak and I must say I was laughing my ass off tbh.

When I heard the official statement from Gabe I felt sickened that he takes absolutely no responsibility for his faults. He simply blames the "hackers" and asks you all for help. First of all I didn't know using Back Orifice which is a administration program was hacking, any n00b can use it and infect computers by people gullible enough to open the exe's. Tie this with the fact that just about any firewall can prevent them and you wonder what on earth the devs were doing. Either that or the people that stole this code used Sub 7 Trojans which are DDOS related. Valve should have prepared for DDOS attacks, they are the first thing you should prepare for when you get a decent publication. It's no good thinking it'll be alright because it won't, Half Life 2 is the most eagerly awaited game for five years after the genre-defining original, so you expect all sorts of attacks from hackers and other idiots. You would have thought it would have been programmed on an Intranet which had no connection to the Internet whatsoever, this is what I would have done and I would have done it properly. Why did this Intranet have access to the net anyway? It wasn't required. They should have got their shit sorted.

Gabe acts like Jamie Bulgers mother who instead of taking some responsibility for letting her child walk off out of her sight, Gabe tries to blame the "hackers" entirely and won't confess his security was as weak as a wet paperbag in a rainstorm. Sure the "hackers" shouldn't have been doing that in the first place, but at least take some responsibility for your lack of security. If you leave a five pound note in the street and come back a week later what do you do? "OMG THEY STOLE IT FIND OUT WHO DID IT WE WILL SUE THEM ITS ALL THEIR FAULT"

I felt sick to my stomach that Gabe is asking for our help now, he doesn't regret securing his Intranet, blame it all on the "hackers", that's it.

I will probably get banned for this, but I believe I have the right to tell the truth and didn't unecessarily flame him, it's the truth and I hope Gabe is listening and will respond to this, take some responsibility. Then nail the guys who did this, because his actions in response to this attack were unprofessional.

Theft is theft, whether I leave my front door open or not.

and your rant helps Valve?
Stealing something is not less illegal if it was easy to steal.

shut up gem

i left my door open on my car once, my radio was stolen. i was still ****in pissed. and its still theft.

What were you leaving your door open for, you silly boy? I said take the responsibility that you were stupid enough to leave it open in the first place. Yeah it's still theft, and my post didn't dispute that, it's saying that people should take up responsibility for their actions and stop blaming people who are insecure enough to steal anyway.

Nice analogy with the Bulger case moron. She turned away, turned back and he was gone. You don't think the kid who led the toddler by hand to his death was completely responsible? Uhuh.

BUT you have a certain level of security that is expected. Meaning if you have a responsibility to keep a billion dollars safe you protect it at a level more so then 5 dollars. If on your shoulders you have 5 years of work from yourself, co-workers, and other vendors you better take the proper precautions. If not take the burden ion your shoulders and say YES WE GOOFED, and yes we need your help.

NO I do not agree what has been done, and no I would never do it. But in this day and age you must ALWAYS think on a defensive scale.

jAkUp sorry about your loss. BUT if you would have taken the proper precautions (locking door) the scum would have moved on to another victim.

Again its a sad thing BUT a little of the "blame" does/MAY rest on the infrastucture at Valve, and thats all Gemini was saying.

As much as I want to flame this guy, I must admit he does make a few valid points. You simply can not trust people or security anymore. Putting sensitive code on a computer, ANY computer, connected to the interent is inherently dangerous.

Murphy's Law applys here - If something can go wrong, it most likely will.

gemini, why are u here? Whats the purpose of your post, you have said 2 hypocritcal statements now.

Secondly, you can never prepare for 10 million people knocking on your door at once. Nor can u prepare for 1% of that 10 million peoiple being complete asses whom try to hack you and dos your servers, you do the math my friend.

Let me see you prepare for it. This same thing happend to microsoft and they spent 10's of millions ons ecruty so it wouldnt happen. If soemone wants in bad enough they WILL get in. And sadly when u have 10 million people who want your game, thats just basisng it on the original people that bought hl1, and not new customers, and say 1% are bad apples, than you got soem serious people trying to figure out how to get in.

For everything locked can be opened, nothing is secure. Rule #1

Personally i suspect corporate espionage, and the hackers(m y g o t) are the scapegoats, by getting the distro leaked to them.

Yeah blame the kids who killed Jamie Bulger, they were sure reponsible for her being a bad enough mother to let her kid out of sight. At least when I have kids I'll pick a wife who is a decent mother and won't let her kid wander off into a busy shopping centre, oh wait, it wasn't even busy!
