In my humble opinion, the well known video of the Gman talking to Gordon does NOT take place at the start of the game, but AT THE END! Yes, you read right!
REAL STORY IN HL2 :
you find yourself in City 17 ... you fight ... you kill ... and so on ...
At the end of the game Gordon wakes up in some sort of lab, but has no clue where or "when" he is! The room is equipped with 3 large screens playing and re-playing a video of the Gman, "wake up Mr. Freeman, and smell the ashes" ...
Gordon can feel that his head is somehow wired to a super computer, which he later discovers is running a World simulation software, like the one in the Matrix. This program has one purpose : simulate World events and prepare Gordon to fight the alien invasion in that World in consequence.
BUT it turns out that the program was a failure, and he is the only human being still alive.
Conclusion : his life has no purpose, and since he's a Catholic who doesn't believe in suicide, he starts programming a new game on the supercomputer and calls it "Half-Life" ...
... something we know as "Half-Life 3".
