Is it possible to play half-life 2 mods if you only have Portal installed???
Technically it should be,because they both run on Source but i don't know if the mods need the textures from HL2...
I post this here because i don't know where else to post it.

Some mods only require the SDK base which comes with some models from HL2, but I believe most of them use the full games.

If you got Portal for free and don't own other Source games you likely won't be able to run mods at all.

It depends on the mod. Some require specific games because they use resources from that game. Eg, a mod that includes Hunters as enemies will probably require Episode Two. Some mods only require the Source SDK Base which you can get if you have bought any of the games on this list.

In short: It depends on the mod.

I am not sure if you get Source SDK base 2007 with Portal? If you can check under the Tools tab in Steam I would like to know, since it interests me if people with only Portal on their Steam account will be able to play Water.

If you do have Source SDK Base 2007, you will be atleast be able to play some mods that don't mount the HL2 content. I am not sure what exactly the HL2 content is, as the Source SDK Base seems to have most models, sounds and materials. Even ones that you would think only comes with HL2. "HL2 Content", i.e. the content you get if you mount appid 220, might be stuff like HL2 maps and choreographed scenes and so on.

As for multiplayer mods it might be a little more complicated if they mount appid 320 which is the appid for hl2dm, and it contains not only the maps, but the multiplayer player animations as well. A lot of mods would probably use those animations atleast in the beginning of their development, so they would mount 320. Then again, total conversion mods would probably have their own animation sets.

One way to check if you would be able to play a mod is to see if it has any AdditionalContentId in it's gameinfo.txt. If it doesn't, it doesn't try to mount anything and you should have all the models and materials in place.
