Half-Life 2 - Not so good looking ?

Just looking at screenshots 1 year on after the delayed shipping date, they are no where near as impressive as to back then.
Mainly due to new games out such as farcry doom3 etc.

Do you think the same?

Judging from screenshots, they seemed to have dated a bit, especially in comparison to games like Doom 3 and Far Cry. But they still look pretty damn good in motion.

I think it looks fantastically awesome, the only next-gen game to not look plasticy and fake. I guess you just have to be sophisticated to appreciate it, as Gabe hinted

When Merc playtested he said it was the best looking game he's ever played. Even better then Far Cry (This was before Doom 3, and obviously, Doom 3 is better looking then Half-Life 2, in a sense)

Personnaly, I prefer HL2's more natural look. Doom 3 makes kickass metal, but I find the other more organic stuff somewhat lacking.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who holds that opinion either.

Anywho, just look at the new screens Greg Coomer gave us.
For some reason, all the recent pictures up until now looked 'off' and sometimes even worse than the early ones.
IMO the new Greg ones now surpass them all.

And CROM:

I doubt it'll just be another good FPS amoung many. It's only real competition are Farcry, Doom 3 and Stalker.
And Farcry and doom 3 are both generally seen as good/great, but not exceptional.
That means it has two good-ish games to beat, and one that's not out for a year.

Exactly, It sure is pretty but...***nning around for 3 hours in corridors shooting the same exact 3 zombies over and over again kinda turned me off. Im taking a break from it. And IMO HL2 Looks better, I prefer real world looking enviroments over tin can house of mirrors look any day. I don't hate D3, just wasnt all that impressed with it. I mean for a score of 94% in PCGamer.... I would've given it an 83%.

Doom 3 plays just fine on high detail, 800 x 600 on my 9600 XT. P4 3.2, 512. There are a few areas where there's noticable slowdown, however for the most part the game runs fine.

Gameplay is another matter; I wouldn't recommend buying Doom 3 until there are some mods released that you want, single player is boring and frankly there's only so much fun to be had shooting at monsters you can't see.

Yeah, not sure it's fair to compare HL2's look to games like Far Cry or Doom3. It's not what the game was ever meant to be about.

Even if graphiclly Doom3 is better, I still like HL2's look better (haven't played Far Cry so can't comment). Just not a fan of dark rooms and hallways which never end. And the skin tones in Doom3....eeek.

Guess I see it like comparing a beautiful woman who is as dull and stupid as a tennis ball, with a cute/good looking woman who is fun to be around and fairly smart. Some guys will always go for the best looking woman reguardless of whether she can tie her own shoes. And then some guys would rather be with a decent looking woman who is fun and can carrry on a good conversation.

HL2 is clearly the latter of the two. Might not be the best looking game out there, but should be able to make up for that in many other ways. (Should)

I have an ATi 9800 Pro 128MB and Im running it at 1280x1024 High Details, no AA, and getting about 40-50 FPS.

But the real question is if the game is good enough to warrant a $55 price tag. Its kinda like the easy gal you meet at the bar. Sure shes sexy, and when you are checking her out all the anticipation is there. But you bring her home, take it out*, stick it in**,play for a couple of hours, then move on. Shes damn fine looking, but nothing to bring home to your mother.

In the spirit of the Doom3 = Hooker / HL = Stable Relationship argument, I gotta point out that Doom 3 costs more, and it has no replay.

Anyways, to elaborate, I'm not going to give id any more money for their techdemos. It's like paying them to make more money.

I'm not going to settle for: "Well, the gameplay is repetitive, there's no AI, a story that's merely serviceable and there's basically zero multiplayer; but boy, ain't it purty! 93%!"

In that case Doom isn't really a Hooker. You can go back to a hooker and try something new, yes you have to pay again but the point is still valid.

Maybe when D3 has some mods it can be a hooker, right now it's like a woman raised in a very christian household. You have sex with her, you're getting married to her, and it's going to be the missionary position for the rest of your life.

Got doom 3, its alot of fun so far, It is frightening, and people who say its slow paced, have yet to play the game, as its not slow pased at all.
