Hey, I play HL2 and CS Source on my laptop, and am usually not connected to the internet, is there any way that one can play half life without using steam? because it wont let me play in offline mode.
Thanks

i also get that problem on my laptop when i try to start in offline mode it tells me it cant connect to the servers (no shit...). only solution ive found is to connect then disconnect once its logged in, but since ive got a ready connection its not really a problem.

yea, thats what i usually end up doing. but say im on a flight and only just turn on my laptop after take off: i have no internet. ive contacted steam with an email about a week and a bit ago with so far no reply. this would really suck if i could only play HL at home.

First of all, you are lucky your laptop will play HL2/CS.
Second, just watch a movie or something. It's not like you'll be facing real people anyways. Bots are no fun.

Third, I have no problem playing CS offline. Maybe you could start the game online, then just leave it running. Plug it in somewhere before you get on your flight, and hope those 2 hours of battery life don't let you down.

The "can't play offline" bug has been around for over a year... you'd think Valve would've fixed it by now. But then again... it's Valve. :p

yea, i probably wouldnt play cs, just half life. but thanks guys, i guess ill just stick to halflife one untill the bug is fixed.

Maybe because the bug is on a very small scale compared to other bugs? Offline works perfect for me.

well if it works for some people offline, there must be something i can change to make it work on mine, do you guys know a place i can call or something that will give me help? the emailing of valve as ive said doesnt work

Make sure all your games are on 100% updated when steam is connected to the net, once you disconnect on your laptop, run steam, it should say 'steam cant find a connect'. Retry or start in offline mode. Click offline mode, and you'll be able to play. Games must be fully updated beforehand.

As Hectic Glenn said, games must be fully updated, AND you have to make
sure you exit from Steam while you are still online.

I've had good luck getting games to play offline only after doing the following:

1) Start up steam while online (and login if necessary).

2) Launch every game I might want to play while offline, and close it.

3) Go back to the steam window, and click File -> Exit [Right clicking the steam icon doesn't seem to make it work right..]

4) Disconnect the machine from the internet.

5) Launch steam, and tell it to run in offline mode, then try to play the game.

very simple solution that i know works. open your network connections and disable all the connections.
