Half-Life 2 praised by Microsoft

I'm not saying that. There's a not so thin line between criticism and hating. Odd you use a product you hate.

With-out MS we'd also get tremendous amounts of incompatabilities because there'd be no standard. e.g. Windows, Linux, Mac.....

Erm.... ever heard of the POSIX standard (the one that UNIX, Linux, Mac, BSD all adhere too)?

Also they do give a lot of free stuff away/support. Yeah i know they conversly charge hidious amounts for other stuff though.

Microsoft charge for everything they can, sure they have free support, but they need to becasue thier original infinitely overpriced* OS has so many problems.

Compared to other COMPLETELY FREE (inc support) operating systems.

Bascially microsoft are trying to claim some credit for HL2. The fact remains it could have been done in OpenGL

I bought a MS Wireless Intellimouse a while back, and after a year or so it started acting badly so i called MS tech support. After just 5 minutes and simply reading a number off back of mouse they sent me a brand new one. Better yet the problem with old one went away leaving me with 2 "mice". Also I love XP no crashes, and so what if it uses lots of resources I have resources to spare. I use window blinds to which makes it look all sexy. If however MS pushes forward with its whole trusted computing crap effectively turning PCs into propietary nonsense like Macs I will be pissed.

That's not quite what i ment. I meen that if there wasn't an OS that your average user recognized, and that many people use, then lots of other Os' would pop up to take a slice of the market, leading to lots of Os' which would be incompatable with eachother.

I agree with you on the pricing thing though.

some versions of red hat are expensive :\
and I don't think xp is very buggy at all

Whoever complained about Windows being "stolen" : I can see your point, but noone bitches about how almost all FPSs now have the same HUD, or gun scrolling method, or way to fire a gun, etc.

Much the same way that in my limited knowledge of OS's, they all have "windows" pertaining to seperate categories (IE, picture viewer, media player, word doc, etc.).

besides, would we have good airplanes today if there wasn't competition and "stealing" of ideas? the fault in this idea is that smoetimes competition quashing might also kill the advancement of a medium. Likewise, too much competition might result in a bunch of tiny, insignificant advancements.

whatever :\ not a huge deal if Microsoft wants to say that hl2 is the standard for next gen games (as hl was, and hl2 will be in my opinion)

Linux, meh, its alright but it caters too much to the DOS loving command line buffs. If you are going to make a GUI, do it all the way, don't just half-ass it ad expect people to use the terminal like second nature.
While ignorance may be bliss for the one who is ignorant, it's annoying as hell for everybody else.

Not a half-assed gui!
