Half-Life 2 Pre-Loading (Phase 2)

WOW GREAT THEY DONT MISSED THE DEADLINE.
Well, there was none, right?
Maybe they learned something... maybe :E

Preloading is usefull. I get the box version but i dont need to install the game. I just input the cdkey and iam gone :p

preloading rules. its quicker, slightly more expensive (even if you can find that extra money on the floor), and is hassle free. it just takes time to download, but who cares???

Man, I'm dying to hear some of these sounds. Does anybody know how they encoded these? (They're all WAV files.)

Anyways, I am buying collectors edition.

1] I wouldnt be surprised if ill DL it during the night and get to play it while youre starting your car :)
2] Ill burn a backup CD and DL the PDF for sure.
3] It is? i know i dont have to pay for shipment tho :)
4] -
5] Boxes are so......90s, arent they? :p

personally i really want to see the hl2 installation screen, and if it be then going down to the shops to buy hl2 gets me excited, all these little things like waiting a day so you can scrounge some money to buy it creates lots of lovely tension and will most likely increase my hype of hl2 to a peak. Thats how i like to play games.

You're not surposed to... That's why they're encrypted! :dozey:

Also it would be a shame if you, let's say, heard and found a soundbite where (e.g.) the G-man og Alyx says something that would really spoil the game... I would rather heard them when the game comes out, with the graphics on my monitor! ;)

The preloading is usefull for the box buyers too, since afaik they don't have to instal the game, they just have to enter the CD key into steam and they can plaaayyyy... However those who buy it over steam or have the ati voucher get to play it the SECOND it's released. I just hope Valve will use a good method of activation. Like a 5kb file, even if they use that, ALOT of people will have to wait since the valve servers won't let people download it :(

I think its pathetic that people who are buying the box preload it just so they don't have to wait 15 (if that probably less than 10) minutes for the game to install whilst people who aren't getting it boxed have to constantly retry for hours to get the content.

Shit read the manual or go outside if waiting 15 minutes bothers you that much...

Boo hoo. ;(

I've preloaded it and I'm still going to buy it in the box. First I like the idea of already having the official HL2-content on my harddisk and second I can play without installing. But why is that a problem? It was if HL2 was released in a few days so not everyone who wanted to buy it on Steam had the chance to preload it but the release is still weeks (hopefully weeks and not months) away so there is still enough time to preload for everyone.

omg...
First of all, the installer is one of the best parts of the game. It takes you probably 10 minutes...
Why waste Steam bandwith?

Then outta nowhere Valve makes a mistake in one of the sound files and has to make everyone preload it again.

Anywho, on a serious note, what will happen if you purchase off of Steam, preload everything, and your hard drive crashes!?!? Are you allowed another copy? or do you have to purchase another CD key ?!?

It's tied to your Steam account. All you need to do is log in and it'll start downloading again. Only thing that's gonna make you have to get another copy is if you get banned for cheating or something.

i haven't been able to preload the first part of half life 2 yet, thanks to all you people who are preloading just for the hell of it. thanks, i'm sure valve appreciates you eating up their bandwidth and costing them more money, while isolating those customers who have no choice but to purchase over steam. you try to cover that with the excuse that you're "stressing the steam network" but since we know that the steam network is already at maximum, you can save your bandwidth and let people who NEED the preload to download it. thankyou.

or just replace the sound file with a new one wich requires 2 seconds of downloading.....

also try to use a smaller font please. it looks so damn ugly and stupid when you use a huge font.

you do realise that no one gives a shit dont you? (not to be mean, but people who were gonna download, already have probably)
Valve have plenty of Bandwidth, thats why they have let everyone download it (regardless of purchase or not).
you may not be able to get the locked/useless content now, but you will have it by the time the game comes out guaranteed.

also, people who are whining about the fact that they are purchasing it over steam and cant get a hold of it, while others who arent are eating the bandwidth..
you guys have to remember the game is probably a month away (at the least) and there is PLENTY of time for everyone to download the content..... I mean thats the whole point of steam and a PRE-LOAD isnt it?

If the game were released/playable and everyone was downloading for the hell of it, then I would say, let the steamers get it first.... but its not, so who cares when you get it, as long as you get it before the release date? (which will be a long ways off.. the game has not even gone gold yet)

agreed, they are lame dorks.

i think the lame dorks are people who think hl2 preload was solely for them. Why did valve let anyone preload if that was the case? and it doesnt matter if it takes u another 2 weeks to get the preload you still wont be able to play it.

spoiler?

LOL, I'm sure Mr Lucas and his lawyers will be paying Gabe and Co a visit if it is dude ;)

BTW: Valve undoubtably pay a flat rate for their servers, it would be unfeasible for them to pay actual bandwidth usage costs.

muppets....

I'm sure we will all have the game soon enough.. but I doubt before the end of september, summer release my arse! hehe

oh well :p

I took the liberty of outlining the (numerous) spelling mistakes in your post. Perhaps these were unintentional, however they further degraded my opinion of you especially with the bundled insult.
you do realise that no one gives a shit dont you?
Thanks for the insight to your intelligence.

As for your argument: I feel I should have a look at this too, even though from what i've seen so far I'm not sure i should be interested in what you have to say.

(not to be mean, but people who were gonna download, already have probably)

I'd like to point out here what I should have when I made my original post: I've tried to preload HL2 every day since the preload went live, several times each day. And I have not succeeded once to pre-load. There are others in the same position as me, if you looked on the forums you would probably see this. And I plan to purchase over steam. Oh well, i guess you were wrong.

Valve have plenty of Bandwidth, thats why they have let everyone download it (regardless of purchase or not).

read above section.

you may not be able to get the locked/useless content now, but you will have it by the time the game comes out guaranteed.

Is this the same sort of guarantee that i got when i couldn't preload/download cs:cz? Because that took 2 weeks too.

If the game were released/playable and everyone was downloading for the hell of it, then I would say, let the steamers get it first.... but its not, so who cares when you get it, as long as you get it before the release date?

Perhaps YOU, who aren't buying over steam, should wait? Does it make any difference to you, since you will have a boxed copy when the game comes out, regardless of steam's status?

And maybe you haven't noticed, but there's been a little test that valve has been running on curious hl2 fans. You can read about it here. i'm guessing that would be a reason to preload hl2 as well, no?

But then again, you might not be interested in that. Probably you're a 12 year old cs player who will reply to this with more swearing and profanity. I don't care.

thanks insane. if all forum members were like you, i'd come here more often.

i hate when people point out frigging spelling mistakes, thats so uncooth. anyways, i use to hate steam, still do till people confirm its not full of spyware, but anywho, me, i bought a 9600 xt with the voucher. if you read the voucher, it says it will take 4-6 or 8 weeks to get the boxed version in the mail, which im going to get, cause thats the only way to get a game imo. so at least now ill be able to play it for the 3 weeks or so till i beat it, then when i gt the boxed version, i can leave it sealed :). I jsut feel bad for 56kers, to whom steam is very useless, and im thinking in a way to save money, valve might not put out all the fully publlished products to the voucher holders. anyone know, with the voucher, do you get box and all?

polyguns: a forum isn't like a chatroom. you can go over what you've typed and correct spelling mistakes. it isn't hard and it makes people have a better opinion of you.

you outlined 2 (numerous? do two typos really demand enough attention to even bother posting?) and they technically were typos, but if you knew me you would know that I never put apostrophes in my contractions, I just dont bother. how that provides you with an adequate representation of the level of my intellect is quite beyond me.

it does however show arrogance on your part.. its not like I responded in 1337 speak, or I was insulting you.
I highlighted my contraction errors in advance for you, showing that not only do I know I do it, I just dont care.. and I wont start now. (not being arrogant, its merely that I dont care about apostrophes in an online forum)

WaryWolf said:

you took that the wrong way. I wasnt saying "no one gives a shit about your opinion" not in the least bit, I was saying no one gives a shit about Valve's bandwidth, not even Valve. (perhaps I should have specified)

dude you have a major chip on your shoulder, no need for the abhorent attitude. if you truly didnt care about my opinion, why let it get to you? why pick apart my post as if you are being personally attacked by some kid who said "LOLS LOLS NO, you is teh wrng!!!!!1111oneelevenoen1!!" (I will highlight that too for you, so that you dont respond and point out my intentional spelling mistakes)

nope, I was referring to the people you were claiming to be stealing "your bandwidth" not you :)

naw, Valve are on this one, therefore you can expect a good delay. (I was being sarcastic with my guarantee simply because it is Valve)

WaryWolf said:

I am purchasing a copy over steam, probably 2 (since I have two computers) dependant on availability of HL2 upon release, however I am purchasing at least one copy from steam for sure.
therefore like most of your post, your assumptions are quite unfounded.

WaryWolf said:

I have indeed noticed, and that is a good point... but isnt that counter productive to note? your arguement was "why are people who arent purchasing, pre-loading? we people purchasing hl2 through Steam need the bandwidth!"
you just gave a very valid reason why everyone wants the preload, and why they should be entitled to it.

WaryWolf said:

I dont know where the hell you procured that impression from, and how you could simply niche me based upon one post is simply ridiculous.
Im quite the opposite in fact, I hate CS and Im 22 :/
welcome to the forums, but you really need to settle down, I didnt attack you personally at all... why you jumped at me like you did does not bode well for your own "intellect, and maturity level"
but Im not one to pick at people for their shortcomings, as I OFTEN say, attack the issue not the person.

 :) take it easy bro.

-MagicalPoop

ummmm.....so your argument
for buying Half-Life 2 in a store as opposed to Steam is that

1. You actually do get it later than people from Steam
2. You have to throw out a stupid box that you never use....
3. It's more expensive to buy it in the store

Those are pretty weak arguments...almost as weak as the arguments the Republicans have been using against Kerry, HIYOOOOOOOOOOOO!

But seriously, the one thing you're right about is buying the collectors edition. If you want that, stay away from my bandwidth on Steam! but if you're not buying it, Steam is the way to go, I mean, c'mon, who wouldn't want to save $10?

meh i payed $15 for the coupon on ebay awhile back so i can care less if i dl it or get it on cd.

But why do the Steam-buyers this preload already? Of course not because it takes a lot of HD-space and they can't do anything with it. They want it because they want a part of HL2 on their HD as fast as possible because that excites them. It makes them feel all warm inside with a nice feeling in their belly, just like all of us. Or is it just me?

-edit: woohoo, Steam just continud the preload, yesterday it suddenly stopped at 62% but now it's going at approximately 200 kilobytes per second.

This is wacked... I finished the first preload 3 hours ago or so, and people say that to start the second, you need to reboot steam / wait a few hours... I´ve done that now and it still says "100% finished locked and blabla"... what do I do?

/D

Maybe avoid the peakhours. When I knew about the second preload I started Steam, and I had the same too. The next day I woke up early to avoid the peak hours, so the European servers are less loaded and just after I started Steam it already began preloading.

lol, I had both files on my HDD. But I just downloaded it in one session..

/D

Little time ? it will be done downloading withinm 10-20 minutes on my connection, depends on the size, which I assume will be about 2gb.
